This easy, no-bake berry trifle with angel food cake is perfect for summer barbecues, patriotic holidays, or anytime you need a light and fruity dessert that looks as good as it tastes. Every bite is cool, creamy, and bursting with berry flavor—plus, it comes together in minutes with just a handful of ingredients.

Recipe Highlights
- Light but satisfying: The fluffy cake, whipped topping, and fresh berries create a dessert that’s indulgent but not heavy.
- Perfect for a crowd: This triple berry trifle makes a large batch, so it’s ideal for potlucks, BBQs, and family parties. It fills a big trifle bowl and serves 10–12 people easily.
- No baking required: By using pre-made angel food cake, there’s no need to turn on the oven, making this a great option for hot summer days.
- Vibrant and festive: The red, white, and blue layers make this berry trifle especially great for patriotic holidays like the 4th of July and Memorial Day.
- Quick assembly: Everything comes together in under 20 minutes. The hardest part is waiting for it to chill before serving!

Ingredients in Triple Berry Trifle
- Milk: Any type of milk will work great! Skim milk, whole milk, almond milk…it’s all delicious!
- Sour cream: The recipe calls for sour cream, but I often swap it out with non-fat plain Greek yogurt. You can even use vanilla Greek yogurt if you prefer – it really intensifies the vanilla flavor!
- Vanilla pudding mix: You will need a small box of instant vanilla pudding mix. You can use sugar-free pudding mix if you prefer.
- Heavy whipping cream: You will need 2 cups of heavy whipping cream. You’ll need to whip it until stiff peaks form before adding to the recipe.
- Powdered sugar: Just 1/4 cup of powdered sugar will help to sweeten up the whipped cream.
- Angel food cake: You will need 1 large angel food cake. Cut the cake into 1″ cubes – you will have about 8 cups of cubed cake for the trifle. You can use the smaller angel food cakes that come in loaves, but you will need to use 2 of them.
- Strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries: You will need about 2 cups of each type of berry, but you can definitely increase or decrease the amounts. Add some peaches or blackberries…or just do strawberries if those are your favorite.

Recipe Tips
Full instructions for making the trifle can be found on the recipe card below, but here are a few helpful tips.
- Build in clear layers: A glass bowl or trifle dish shows off the gorgeous layers and gives the dessert its signature look.
- Use cold cream and a chilled bowl: This helps the whipped cream whip up quickly and hold its structure longer.
- Pat the berries dry: Removing excess moisture helps prevent watery layers and keeps the whipped cream fluffy.
- Don’t skip the sour cream: It adds depth and prevents the dessert from becoming overly sweet. Greek yogurt can be substituted if desired.
- Customize the fruit: Add blackberries or sliced kiwi for a twist, or choose seasonal berries for variety.

Storage Instructions
- Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container or wrapped tightly with plastic wrap.
- Best enjoyed within 2–3 days. Over time, the cake will absorb moisture and soften more, but it will still taste delicious.
- Do not freeze, as the whipped cream and berries won’t hold up to thawing.

FAQs
Can I use frozen berries instead of fresh?
Fresh berries are best for presentation and texture, but thawed and well-drained frozen berries can work in a pinch. Just blot away excess liquid before layering.
What can I use instead of angel food cake?
Try sponge cake, pound cake, or even ladyfingers. Each will add a slightly different texture—pound cake is richer, while sponge cake is more absorbent.
Can I make this in individual cups?
Yes! Layer ingredients in mason jars or clear dessert glasses for personal-size triple berry trifles that are fun, portable, and perfect for parties.
Can I make this ahead of time?
Absolutely! You can assemble the trifle up to 24 hours in advance. The flavors blend beautifully as it chills. Just hold off on adding the top garnish of berries until right before serving.
