WHY IS TRIPLE BERRY TRIFLE SO DELICIOUS?
–Fresh berries! I absolutely love berries and I love finding new ways to use them in recipes. Even if they are good enough to just eat plain by the pint.
–No frosting! I’ve just never been a huge fan of regular cake frosting and I love how the whipped cream/pudding filling goes so well with the angel food cake.
–So easy to make! The base of the cake is a store bought angel food cake. Can’t get much easier than that! The filling is very simple with just a few ingredients and the flavor is incredible. The trifle looks complicated and fancy because of all the layers, but really, it couldn’t be much easier to make!
–The cake is served chilled. No bake, chilled desserts are so refreshing, especially in the summer when it’s so hot outside. This cake is perfect for the 4th of July with the colors of all of the berries!
WHAT KIND OF FRUIT TO USE IN A TRIFLE?
This recipe doesn’t just have to be made with strawberries, blueberries and raspberries. This recipe can be made with just strawberries or any combination of berries: strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and even blackberries. The triple berry combination makes this the perfect dessert for the 4th of July!
Can you make Triple Berry Trifle in advance?
Trifle is best to make it about 5-6 hours before serving, so everything can chill together, but you can serve it immediately after making if needed.
You can assemble everything about 12-24 hours before serving, but if you make it sooner than that, the trifle may start to get a little bit soggy. If I need to do most of the prep work even more in advance, I make up the pudding mixture and keep it in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days before assembling the rest of the trifle.
Ingredients in Triple Berry Trifle
Milk – Any type of milk will work great! Skim milk, whole milk, almond milk…it’s all delicious!
Sour cream – The recipe calls for sour cream, but I often swap it out with non-fat plain Greek yogurt. You can even use vanilla Greek yogurt if you prefer – it really intensifies the vanilla flavor!
Vanilla pudding mix – You will need a small box of instant vanilla pudding mix. You can use sugar free pudding mix if you prefer.
Heavy whipping cream – You will need 2 cups of heavy whipping cream. You’ll need to whip it until stiff peaks form before adding to the recipe.
Powdered sugar – Just 1/4 cup of powdered sugar will help to sweeten up the whipped cream.
Angel food cake – You will need 1 large angel food cake. Cut the cake into 1″ cubes – you will have about 8 cups of cubed cake for the trifle. You can use the smaller angel food cakes that come in loaves, but you will need to use 2 of them.
Strawberries, blueberries and raspberries – You will need about 2 cups of each type of berry, but you can definitely increase or decrease the amounts. Add some peaches or blackberries…or just do strawberries if those are your favorite.
How to make Triple Berry Trifle
Gently mix all the berries together and set aside.
In a large bowl, beat the milk, sour cream and pudding mix on low speed until thickened.
Fold the powdered sugar into the whipped whipping cream. Fold the whipped cream mixture into the pudding mixture and mix just until combined.
Place half of the angel food cake cubes in the bottom of a trifle dish.
Place a third of the berries on top (making sure there are berries on the edges of the dish so that they show through from the outside!)
Top with half of the pudding mixture.
Repeat all of the layers once and then top with the last third of the berries.
You can serve immediately or keep in the refrigerator for up to 5-6 hours before serving.

DO YOU HAVE TO HAVE A TRIFLE DISH?
Trifle dishes are perfect for trifles, but you can just use a large glass bowl if you don’t have one!
Is Triple Berry Trifle healthy?
Trifle is sweet and sugary and probably won’t ever be on a list of health foods, but it is actually at least a little bit healthier than many other desserts.
How to reduce the calories in trifle recipe
You can reduce the calories by swapping out the whipped cream with Cool Whip topping and if you use non-fat plain Greek yogurt instead of the sour cream, you’ll subtract a few more calories and add a little bit of protein as well!
You can also use skim milk with sugar-free pudding mix to reduce the calories and fat even more. Another way to reduce the calories per serving is to double or triple the amount of berries in the trifle. This way you’ll have more servings, but they will each be a little more heavy on berries than cake!
