Sausage Baked Beans made by adding a few simple ingredients to canned beans. Delicious baked bean recipe with sausage, green pepper, onion, ketchup and brown sugar.
This baked bean recipe is one of my favorites because it is so simple! I love adding sausage to the beans – it adds so much flavor and even substance that you can even serve this as a main dish with a baked potato and salad on the side!
Use canned Pork and Beans and mix them with sausage, pepper, onions and a little bit of ketchup and brown sugar to make the most delicious baked beans with just a few minutes of prep time!
WHAT ARE BAKED BEANS?
Baked beans is a dish containing beans that are baked at a low temperature for a lengthy period of time in some sort of sauce.
Baked beans are a great side dish for any picnic, pot-luck, or BBQ. One of the best things about baked beans is that a little goes a long way. Which makes it perfect for serving a crowd!
What to serve with Baked Beans?
We absolutely love having baked beans with baked potatoes. Some of my kids have a hard time eating a baked potato without them! They also pair well with BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwiches or BBQ Chicken Sandwiches. Or serve them with Easy Cheeseburgers or Grilled Flank Steak.
Ingredients in Sausage Baked Beans
Pork sausage: You will need one pound of pork sausage. You can use mild, regular, or even a spicier sausage if you prefer!
Green pepper: Dice up one green pepper. You can cheat like I do and use frozen diced green peppers to save time.
Onion: I use yellow onions in this recipe. You will need to dice up one medium sized onion. Just like the peppers, you can save time if you use frozen diced onions. This is a staple that I always have in stock in my freezer – I use them in so many recipes and never have to deal with chopping onions!
Pork & Beans – You will need two cans of Pork and Beans as the base ingredient in this recipe. You will need one large can (28 ounce) and one small can (15 ounce). No need to drain them, you will just open them up and add them to the other ingredients.
Ketchup – A half cup of ketchup provides a lot of flavor to the baked beans. Any type of ketchup works great. You can use a low-sugar ketchup to cut down the sugar and sweetness a little if you’d like.
Brown sugar – Just a half cup of brown sugar adds just the right amount of sweetness to the baked bean recipe. You can reduce this a little bit if you don’t want the beans to be quite so sweet. Or add a little more…I promise it’s delicious too!

ARE BAKED BEANS GOOD FOR YOU?
Beans in general are high in protein and fiber and other nutrients. Baked beans made with minimal sugar and sauces can be a nutritious addition to a balanced diet.
You can easily adapt this recipe to have less sugar if you would like to make them a little bit better than you. Opt for lower sugar ketchup and decrease the amount of brown sugar as well.
If you would like to have a little less fat in them, you could use turkey sausage instead of pork sausage. Or you could even leave the sausage out entirely and the baked beans still have a fantastic flavor. We definitely prefer them with the sausage! You could even add some bacon in there too…everything is better with bacon, right?!
CAN YOU EAT BAKED BEANS FOR BREAKFAST?
Yes! In fact, they are quite good served that way. You can eat them cold or heat them up. Some people even enjoy them served on top of toast for a more savory breakfast treat. They pair well with scrambled eggs and hash browns too!
