Oatmeal Waffles made fresh for breakfast with oats, cinnamon and several other basic ingredients. This oatmeal waffle recipe can be topped with berries, bananas and whipped cream for a delicious and hearty breakfast with lots of nutrition and flavor!
What toppings do you put on waffles?
There are so many options for toppings for waffles, but my favorites are fresh fruit and fresh whipped cream. It’s so fun and easy to have a waffle bar set up with lots of options so that everyone can choose their favorites. My kids love to put a little bit of Nutella on top of the waffles before they add their fruit and cream. I actually really love to add a little bit of Greek yogurt with my fruit to get a little bit of an added protein boost. Strawberries, raspberries, bananas, peaches and blueberries are all amazing on these waffles.
These waffles are also wonderful with just a little bit of butter, or butter and syrup. No need to get fancy! When my kids were toddlers, they loved to eat them plain!
My waffles always seem to stick the waffle iron. How can I fix this?
I spray liberally with non-stick spray in between each and every waffle. If that still doesn’t do the trick it might be time for a new waffle iron. This is the waffle iron I have and love.
How to make Oatmeal Waffles
The batter comes together extremely fast. The dry ingredients include flour, rolled oats, baking powder, cinnamon, salt and brown sugar.
Add in the wet ingredients, eggs, milk and melted butter, whisk together thoroughly. There you have your waffle batter!
Spray your waffle iron with non-stick spray before baking them up. Cook in the waffle iron until golden brown. Add your favorite toppings and enjoy!

Can I make the Oatmeal Waffles ahead of time and then reheat?
While the waffles taste best hot right off the iron, you can make ahead and keep them in the refrigerator for a few days and then reheat in the oven, toaster or microwave if needed. I prefer to reheat them in the toaster because they taste more fresh that way!
Another thing that I like to do is double (or triple) the batter and then I can keep it in the refrigerator for a 2-3 days so that I can make “fresh” waffles for several days without having to pull out all of the ingredients again!
Can these Oatmeal Waffles be frozen?
This waffle recipe freezes wonderfully. Make the waffles in the waffle maker and then cool them completely before freezing them. You can place 4-6 waffles in a Ziplock freezer bag and store them in the freezer for up to a couple of weeks. If you want to store them longer than that, wrap each one in plastic wrap before placing in the Ziplock bag to freeze.
To reheat the waffles, I prefer to toast them in the toaster because it brings back some of the crispiness. You can also heat them up in the oven or the microwave.
What types of oats do you use in oatmeal waffles?
I prefer to use old-fashioned oats in oatmeal waffles, but quick oats work just wonderfully too!
How to make perfect waffles every time:
There are several little tips I have found to help make the best waffles that have the right amount of fluffiness, crispiness and flavor every time!
- Do NOT over mix the batter! You want to mix the wet and dry ingredients just until combined. Don’t use an electric mixer or get carried away with your whisk. It’s ok to have some lumpiness in the batter as long as the ingredients are well combined.
- Make sure to use the full tablespoon of baking powder as this will provide the “rise” to your waffles. It may also be a good idea to make sure that your baking powder isn’t expired! Baking powder loses effectiveness over time so the fresher, the better!
- In this particular recipe, it is important to beat the eggs before adding them to the wet mixture and also that the butter is melted before added. Both of these steps will make a big difference in the final result so don’t forget them!
- If you haven’t used your waffle maker before, it may take a little bit of practice to achieve the perfect “doneness” of your waffles! I have one waffle maker that lights up when it is “done” cooking, but I actually like to cook them just a little bit longer than that. I have another waffle maker that doesn’t have a timer on it so I just have to keep checking. Some people (my kids!) prefer the waffles to be a little more soft and I like mine a little more well-done!

Super yummy! I used 1 cup of all purpose flour and 1/2 cup of whole wheat just to make them a little heartier, and they were still so fluffy and delicious. Great flavor and texture, and they come together pretty quickly.
