Strawberry Shortcake Trifle
This trifle recipe comes together SUPER FAST because we use store-bought angel food cake, which is often used to make strawberry shortcake! So gather your ingredients and let’s make this trifle in MINUTES!
Now is the time that strawberries are starting to go on sale and you can buy them by the case! I can’t think of any more delicious way to devour them than in a strawberry trifle recipe.
What Kind of Fruit to Use in a Trifle?
This recipe doesn’t just have to made with strawberries, although in my opinion, they are the sweetest! This recipe can also be made with a combination of berries: strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and even blackberries. The angel food cake and cream cheese compliment all the berries!
I like to use strawberries for Valentines Day recipes too, since they’re red!
How To Make A Strawberry Trifle
Prepare the Strawberries
The first step to making this strawberry trifle recipe is to slice and sweeten up the strawberries. I like to slice the strawberries so they form a triangle, you can slice them into rounds if you prefer.
Once all of the strawberries are sliced you will combine them with the sugar and a little lemon juice. They will become perfect as they sit and marinate for a few minutes while you assemble the other layers.
Slice the Angel Food Cake
Purchase the round angel food cake, as opposed to the brick cake that’s baked in a bread pan. Take the angel food cake and slice into 3 horizontal layers and set aside.
Mix the Sweet Cream Filling
For the filling, in a large mixing bowl combine the softened cream cheese, cream and vanilla and mix until well combined, like a frosting consistency. If you need to add more cream, go for it!
How to Layer a Trifle
I always love this part of making a strawberry trifle, choose your own adventure and make it a work of art!!
First, put down a layer of angel food cake in the bottom of a shallow bowl, place a few strawberries in the middle circle of the cake, spread on a layer of the cream cheese mixture and bring out more of those deliciously sweet strawberries for the next layer. If you have a clear bowl, you can place some strawberries along the side of the bowl for added flare! You will have plenty of strawberries to add a generous layer.
Continue making layers until you have finished your work of art. The last layer of whipped cream and strawberries should be the last thing you add, just before serving.

How to make a Strawberry Trifle
You’ll begin by slicing the strawberries and sprinkling them with sugar. Toss lightly and then set aside, so that the sugar dissolves and makes a lovely sweet glaze over the strawberries.
Mix together the cream cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla and some of the whipping cream, then set aside. You’re welcome to use Stabilized Whipped Cream recipe (Cool Whip) in this recipe if you’d prefer. It will be a fast substitution, but I think real whipped cream tastes so much better!

Take a store-bought angel food cake in thirds, so that you have 3 circles of cake.

How to Make Strawberry Trifle in Advance
Strawberry trifle is a dessert that you can easily make ahead. Simply layer the cake, cream cheese and strawberries for up to 24-48 hours ahead of time. Store in the refrigerator. You will want to wait to add the whipping cream and strawberries on top until just before you serve the trifle as the whipping cream can become separated and make the angel food cake soggy.

I find the layering of angel food interesting and simple, but I think it would be too dry. I find that todays’ strawberries are not juicy. The last time I made a trifle, I made a simple syrup and cooked some strawberries in the syrup until tender. Then I pureed them with a wand blender. I added syrup to each layer and it made the trifle juicier and more flavorful.
