Sloppy Joe Bowls are made with ground beef, onions, and peppers cooked with lots of spice and tons of flavor. This recipe is a delicious high-protein, low-carb meal that is ready to eat in less than 20 minutes!
We all love Sloppy Joes! This homemade version of sloppy joes is made with a delicious blend of flavors. Eating the meat without a bun saves you a few carbs so you can eat sweet potato fries instead! And of course, you can always put the meat on a bun if you’d like. This version is made completely from scratch and is so much better than the kind out of a can.
WHY YOU’LL LOVE THIS SLOPPY JOE RECIPE:
- Quick and easy. You can make this whole recipe in less than 20 minutes! Perfect for lunches or quick weeknight dinners. The whole meal is made in one pan on the stove – fewer dirty dishes and no oven required! This is also a great meal for meal prep.
- Low carb, gluten-free. Trying to eat healthier or accommodate special dietary needs? While this recipe is not vegan, it’s a great option for anyone who can’t have gluten or wants to eat more protein and less carbs. Just swap out the soy sauce with coconut aminos if you need the dish to be gluten-free. And if you love carbs, throw some of the mixture on a bun and enjoy it that way!
- Delicious. My kids are pretty picky, but they love this one, especially when I serve it with sweet potato fries!
INGREDIENTS IN SLOPPY JOE BOWLS
Olive oil – You’ll need 2 tablespoons of olive oil to cook the meat, onion, peppers, and garlic.
Ground beef – I usually use 90% lean ground beef, but you can use whatever variety you prefer. You can also swap this out with ground turkey if you’d like.
Onion – You will need to dice up one medium yellow onion. I always buy chopped frozen onions when I’m at the grocery store so that I have a stock in my freezer for recipes like this one! Saves time and I never have to worry about chopping onions!
Bell peppers – Green bell peppers add a lot of crunch and flavor. I like to dice them up, but you can do small thin slices if you prefer. The smaller the veggies are chopped, the more likely my kids are to eat them!
Garlic – You will need to mince two cloves of garlic or use 1 teaspoon of minced garlic. I always keep a jar in the refrigerator for recipes like this one.
Yellow mustard – A little bit of yellow mustard adds a lot of flavor!
Ketchup – Use a little ketchup to add a bit of tomato flavor to the sloppy joes.
Soy sauce – You only need 2 tablespoons of soy sauce. You can swap this out with coconut aminos if you want to keep the recipe gluten-free.
Apple cider vinegar – You only need a tiny bit, but don’t leave this out!
Salt and pepper to taste – If you feel like the meat needs a little salt and pepper, go ahead and add it.
Chili powder – Just a teaspoon of chili powder adds a lot of flavor without adding too much spice. If you like a little heat, add a little more!

How to store leftover Sloppy Joes
Leftover meat can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days, or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
How to serve Sloppy Joe Bowls
Serve the seasoned ground beef over sweet potato fries, french fries, tater tots, roasted broccoli, spaghetti squash, or cauliflower rice. Add Easy Mango Fruit Salad on the side and you’ve got a meal! If you need a little something for dessert, some “healthier” dessert options are Creamy Raspberry Jello or a Granola Chocolate Chip Cookie that has 5 grams of protein in it!
SLOPPY JOE MEAL PREP
This is one of my favorite recipes to meal prep for the week. Cook the meat according to directions, and divide it into 4 meal prep containers. Place in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. When you’re ready to eat, just heat it up in the microwave for about 90 seconds-2 minutes.
CAN YOU FREEZE PHILLY CHEESESTEAK BOWLS?
You can freeze the cooked meat/veggie mixture for up to 3 months in an airtight container. Make sure it is completely cooled before freezing. I like to make a double or triple batch and freeze it in Ziplock bags so that I can thaw and portion out for meal prep when needed.
