Reese’s Rice Krispie Treats are loaded with mini Reese’s peanut butter cups, peanut butter chips, and semisweet chocolate chips. Simple rice krispie treat recipe packed with chocolate and peanut butter!
REESE’S RICE KRISPIE TREATS
These little treats begin with butter, marshmallows and Rice Krispies cereal, just like traditional Rice Krispie treats. Simply add some chopped Reese’s peanut butter cups, peanut butter chips and chocolate chips to take these treats to the next level. Adding peanut butter and chocolate to all of that marshmallow deliciousness is absolutely amazing!
It’s no secret that we love Rice Krispie Treats! Here’s a few reasons why:
- So easy to make! Rice Krispie Treats only require a few ingredients and only take about 5 minutes to prepare. Just let them set up for about an hour and they are ready to eat – no baking required!
- So many variations. Even though I love traditional Rice Krispie Treats, I also love how easy it is to change them up a little bit.
- They are delicious! I make a lot of desserts, but Rice Krispie Treats are still one of my all-time favorites and every time I make them for a party, they are devoured in minutes.
HOW DO YOU KEEP RICE KRISPIE TREATS SOFT?
Here are several ways to keep Rice Krispie treats soft. They’re simple, but effective!
- Make sure to not use stale marshmallows. Seriously. Rice Krispie Treats are not the treat to use up those old, hard marshmallows! Recently purchased marshmallows work best.
- Watch that you don’t overcook. You want to heat the marshmallows just until they are melted, not any longer than that!
- Don’t chill in the refrigerator. Even if you want them to set quickly, I find this just dries the marshmallow treats out more quickly.
- Don’t press the mixture too firmly in the pan. The harder you press, the more hard and dry the Rice Krispie treats will be.
- Store in an airtight container on the counter top and eat within 2 days for best results!
INGREDIENTS IN REESE’S RICE KRISPIE TREATS
Butter – The recipe calls for unsalted butter, but I’ve used salted butter before and couldn’t really taste a difference! If you do use salted butter, you don’t need to add the 1/2 teaspoon of salt indicated in the recipe.
Salt – You will need 1/2 teaspoon of salt if you use unsalted butter.
Mini marshmallows – You will need a total of 12 ounces of mini marshmallows, which is about 7 cups. Most of the marshmallows will be melted with the butter, but you will need to reserve about 1 1/2 cups to mix into the recipe later.
Rice Krispies cereal – Seven cups of Rice Krispies cereal is needed. You can use a generic brand if you’d like, or swap the cereal out with Cocoa Puffs, Cocoa Krispies or Reese’s Puffs if you prefer.
Reese’s peanut butter cup minis – Make sure to chop the mini Reese’s peanut butter cups in half. If you want to use the full-size Reese’s peanut butter cups, just chop them into bite-sized pieces.
Reese’s peanut butter chips and semi-sweet chocolate chips – Most of the chips will be mixed into the treats, but some will be reserved to sprinkle on top.
How to make Reese’s Rice Krispie Treats
Lightly grease the bottom of an 11×14 baking pan with cooking spray and line with parchment paper.
In a large pot over low heat, melt the butter and stir in the salt.
Set aside 1 ½ cups of mini marshmallows to mix in later. Add the remaining marshmallows to the melted butter and melt over low heat, stirring constantly. Remove the pot from the heat as soon as it is melted.
Immediately add the Rice Krispies cereal, the 1 ½ cups of mini marshmallows set aside earlier, 1 cup of the halved Reese’s peanut butter cup minis, ½ cup peanut butter chips, and ½ cup semisweet chocolate chips. Gently fold together until evenly combined.
Pour the mixture into the baking pan and spread it out evenly. Do not pack it too tightly!
Top with the remaining Reese’s peanut butter cups, peanut butter chips, and semisweet chocolate chips and gently press them into the bars to help them stick.
OPTIONAL: You can melt down some extra peanut butter chips and/or chocolate chips if you would like a drizzle on top!
Allow the Rice Krispie treats to cool in the pan on the counter for 30-45 minutes before cutting into bars.

REESE’S RICE KRISPIE TREATS VARIATIONS
- To make thicker Rice Krispie treats, you can make them in a 9×13 pan instead.
- You can swap out the chocolate chips and peanut butter chips with Reese’s pieces, M&M’s, or even chopped nuts. Anything that is chocolate or peanut butter (or both!) will work!
- You can use Cocoa Krispies, Cocoa Pebbles or Reese’s Puffs instead of the Rice Krispies to add even more chocolate flavor to the treats.
HOW DO I KEEP MY RICE KRISPIE TREATS FROM STICKING AND CREATING A MARSHMALLOW MESS?
I always coat my rubber spatula with a little bit of butter or non-stick cooking spray and then mixing my Krispie Treats is so much easier! You can also spray the mixing bowl you use, and of course, grease up the 11X14 pan with cooking spray too.
HOW TO MAKE THE BEST RICE KRISPIE TREATS
The key to making the best rice krispie treats is more marshmallows! Of course there are lots of marshmallows in the recipe that are melted with the butter, but the trick is to add MORE marshmallows after you have mixed the cereal in. These marshmallows will soften, but keep their shape, and they make every rice krispie treat recipe taste better.
Try adding 1-2 cups of marshmallows to your favorite rice krispie treat recipe, and I promise you’ll love it even more! Just make to sure to wait until after you’ve mixed the cereal in so that the mixture isn’t still hot enough to completely melt the additional marshmallows.
How to store Rice Krispie Treats
Rice Krispie treats are best eaten the same day, but you can store leftovers in an airtight container on the counter for up to 2 days. Do not refrigerate them.
If the Rice Krispie treats do harden up a bit, you can eat them in the microwave for 5-10 seconds and they will soften up again.
