Chocolate and Peanut Butter Rice Krispie Treats
I like to think that years of improvising in the kitchen have given me the ability to think outside the cereal box (pun intended- hahaha) when it comes to whipping up Rice Krispie treats. I mean, everyone knows the basic recipe, but what do you do when you want something more? You get creative, that’s what! That is exactly what I did with these krispie treats.
We have a peanut butter Rice Krispie treat recipe that is an all time family favorite. The problem is that is has no marshmallows. Seriously, what’s a rice krispie treat without marshmallows?! Incomplete, that’s what. I decided to tweak it a bit here, add a little there and the result are these absolutely divine little treats! They are sweet and chewy with all the favorite flavors, chocolate, marshmallow and peanut butter. Just a fair warning though, they tend to be devoured quickly.
HOW TO MAKE THE BEST RICE KRISPIE TREATS EVERY TIME
Here are several ways to make amazing rice krispie treats and keep them soft and delicious. They are simple, but effective!
- Make sure to not use stale marshmallows, such a simple thing. Rice crispy treats are not the treat to use up those old, hard marshmallows. Recently purchased and fresh marshmallows work best.
- Be careful that you don’t overcook the mixture. You want to bring the cereal coating to a boil, then immediately remove from the heat. Overcooking can affect the outcome and taste.
- Don’t chill the krispie treats in the refrigerator. Even if you want them to set quickly, I find this just dries the marshmallow treats out quickly.
- Store the rice krispie treats in an airtight container and at room temperature. This helps keep them fresh and soft longer.
Peanut Butter Marshmallow Chocolate Krispie Ingredients
Rice krispies: You will need a total of 6 cups of Rice Krispie cereal for the base of this incredibly delicious recipe.
Corn syrup: Add in 1 cup of corn syrup to create a perfect consistency for the cereal coating.
Sugar: For a great sweet taste, use 1 cup of white sugar for this recipe.
Peanut butter: Adding in 1 cup of creamy peanut butter creates the most amazing flavor in these treats.
Marshmallows: You will want to use 1 ½-2 cups of marshmallows for great texture and taste.
Chocolate chips: Use ½ cup of mini chocolate chips to add even more tasty flavor.
How to make Chocolate Peanut Butter Krispie Treats
Prep
Start by spraying a 9 x 13 dish with non-stick cooking spray, set aside. Then, in a large bowl, measure out the 6 cups of Rice Krispies and set aside for later use.
Cook & Assemble
Next, in a small saucepan, combine the sugar and corn syrup. Then bring this mixture to a boil over medium heat. Once the mixture begins boiling, remove from the heat immediately and then add in peanut butter. Stir the mixture to combine well.
Proceed to pour the mixture over the Rice Krispies in the large bowl. Then, using a rubber scraper, stir until the cereal is well coated. The mixture should be soft and easily stirred. Don’t worry about working quickly, at this point you are trying to cool the mixture down a bit. I stirred mine for about 3-4 minutes.
After that, add in the marshmallows and stir a few times. Just before you are ready to transfer the mixture to the pan, stir in half the mini chocolate chips. Now is when you need to work quickly because these little guys melt fast!
Cool
Next, pour the coated cereal into the prepared dish that has been sprayed with cooking spray. Then sprinkle the remaining mini chocolate chips on top and use either the back of a rubber scraper or a plastic baggie over your hand, gently press the mixture into the pan. Work quickly so that the chocolate stays on the treats rather than melting on your hand or the scraper.
Be sure to allow the krispie treats to cool for 1-2 hours, when they have set, cut into 2″ squares.
Serve and enjoy!

HOW LONG ARE PEANUT BUTTER KRISPIE TREATS GOOD FOR?
These tasty little treats can last about a week or so in an airtight container a room temperature. That said I doubt they will actually last that long. With every bite you won’t be able to help but take one more tasty square!
CAN RICE KRISPIE TREATS BE FROZEN?
Yes, they could. I recommend slicing them into serving squares and wrapping individually with plastic wrap before storing in an airtight container. Then you have a tasty treat ready for whenever you get a craving for something sweet. Simply remove from the freezer and let thaw for about 15-20 minutes at room temperature before eating.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR RICE KRISPIE TREATS TO SET?
These tasty rice krispie treats will take about 1-2 hours to cool and set properly. Resist the urge to cool them faster in the fridge, this tends to dry them out a bit. The patience you will need to let these cool and set will be worth it for the final results, I promise!
