What are Muddy Buddies?

This amazing snack is an easy treat that is made using Chex rice cereal and other sweet ingredients. They are often also referred to as puppy chow or Chex buddies. Whatever you call them, one thing is true, this dessert snack is simply amazing! We are big fans of muddy buddies in our house and I am always looking for new flavor variations. This recipe for mint flavored muddy buddies is a fun option for the upcoming Leprechaun holiday that we all know and love. Give them a try and see just how irresistible they are!

CAN I USE ANY CHEX MIX VARIETY?

Yes, you absolutely can! While I personally enjoy using the non-flavored simple Rice Chex or the Corn Chex cereals in this mint version, you can use any flavor of Chex that you want. Feel free to experiment and see which flavor combination you prefer. This is not a “one size fits all” recipe and I encourage you to choose the cereal flavor that is your favorite!

Mint Muddy Buddy Ingredients

Chex rice cereal: You will need 10 cups of Chex rice cereal for the base of this delicious recipe. Using the plain cereal for this recipe really highlights the minty flavor, in our opinion.

Chocolate chips: Use 6 oz of chocolate chips for the “muddy” coating to this sweet treat.

Green candy melts: For more amazing flavor and a festive color, use 6 oz of green candy melts.

Powder sugar: Adding in 2 cups of powdered sugar make these muddy buddies perfectly sweet.

Mint candy: You will want to use 1 cup of mint M&M’s to make this snack treat extra amazing!

Chocolate mints: Add 1 cup of an additional chocolate mint, like Andes mints, or something similar.

How to make Green Mint Chocolate Muddy Buddies

Chocolate coating

Get started by melting the chocolate chips in a large microwave safe bowl for 1 minute. Let sit for 2 minutes in the microwave, then stir gently, adding time in 15 second increments, resting in between, until the chocolate is smooth and melted.

Proceed to pour 5 cups of the cereal squares into the bowl of melted chocolate and stir until completely coated. Then add in 1 cup of powdered sugar and stir again. Set aside.

Green coating

In another large microwave safe bowl, repeat the process with the green candy melts, microwaving for 1 minute, letting them sit, stirring gently, etc.

Once melted, add in 5 cups of the cereal squares and stir. Pour these into a big ziplocked bag and add 1 cup of powdered sugar, zip up and shake until everything is coated.

Combine

Continue to combine both mixes of the coated cereal squares into one zip lock bag (or divide into two). Next mix in 1 cup of M&M’s and 1 cup of the chocolate mints, zip up and shake until well mixed.

Place the muddy buddies in the refrigerator for 10 minutes to cool and set.

Once chilled, serve and enjoy!

HOW DO I STORE MUDDY BUDDIES? 

The best way to store these is in an airtight container or ziplocked bag, to keep them as fresh as possible as long as possible. Keep them at room temperature as well. 

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO MELT CHOCOLATE?

I prefer to melt chocolate in the microwave because it’s so simple! Here’s how to do it: Add chocolate to a microwave-safe bowl and heat for 1 minute per cup of melting chocolate. Let chocolate sit for 2 minutes in the microwave. Gently stir chocolate. If you still see clumps, heat again in 30-second intervals, stirring between each until smooth. Go slow as if you accidently seize the chocolate, you’ll have to throw it out and start again.

IS THIS PUPPY CHOW RECIPE GLUTEN-FREE?

If you use a gluten-free box of Chex mix it will be! Chex currently has several boxes of gluten-free cereal meaning that you have plenty of options to choose from. Just make sure that the box says “gluten-free” on it and double-check the ingredient labels on your other ingredient items to confirm that they are also GF products.

HOW LONG DO MINT CHEX MUDDY BUDDIES LAST?

Well, around my house it does not last long at all. But that is not what you are asking (LOL). If you keep your snack Chex Mix in an airtight container it can last up to 4 -5days and still taste amazing. Anything after that and you may experience stale cereal which is still edible, just less enjoyable.
