Mint Muddy Buddies are a little bit addictive – just a little warning! We love regular muddy buddies around here, but it’s fun to change it up a little bit, and this version is fun and festive for St. Patrick’s Day. Or any time you feel like chocolate and mint. Or you just want a little treat that doesn’t require any baking and can be ready in under 5 minutes.
Are Muddy Buddies Gluten free?
Yep, Mint Muddy Buddies are naturally gluten-free – no modifications necessary!
Ingredients in Mint Muddy Buddies
Rice Chex cereal – You can use other varieties of Chex cereal as well, but I usually use the Rice Chex for making Muddy Buddies because this type doesn’t have much flavor which is perfect because you want to be able to taste the mint and chocolate flavors!
Andes Mints – You’ll need about 45 mints. Hopefully you have some kids that love to help unwrap them!
Butter – You’ll need half a stick of butter to melt with the Andes mints and thin the melted chocolate out a bit.
Powdered sugar– Just a couple of cups needed. If you don’t have powdered sugar, did you know you can make your own? Super easy – all you have to do is put regular sugar in the blender and blend until it looks like powdered sugar. It will be slightly different than the kind you buy at the store, but close enough in a pinch!
Mint M&Ms – How did I not know about the Dark Chocolate Mint M&Ms before making this recipe?! I normally don’t like dark chocolate, but these are amazing. They actually kind of taste like Andes mints, but in M&M form. There is also a crispy mint M&M that you can use, but those aren’t gluten-free, so just keep that in mind if you choose those. Regular M&Ms would work too, but the mint ones add a lot of extra flavor. And if you don’t want them, you can make the muddy buddies without the M&Ms – they are still delicious! I like the pop of color from the M&Ms – it makes the treat look prettier, but they are definitely optional in the recipe.
How to make Mint Muddy Buddies
In a large, microwave-safe bowl, add the unwrapped Andes mints and the butter and then put the bowl in the microwave for about 45 seconds, stirring until melted completely. If necessary, you can put them back in the microwave for an additional 10-15 seconds and then continue to stir until smooth.
Pour cereal into the melted chocolate mixture and mix with a spoon until the cereal is evenly coated.
Add the powdered sugar and stir until evenly coated. The traditional method for this step is to place the chocolate coated cereal in a large ziplock bag and then add the powdered sugar. Close the bag and shake until the powdered sugar is evenly distributed. This works great, but adds the extra step of transferring to the bag and I think it’s just as easy to keep it all in the bowl. Totally up to you! (My kids think it’s fun to shake it up in the bag.) Just make sure that if you leave it all in the bowl, that you are stirring very carefully so you don’t break all the cereal into tiny little pieces!
Gently fold in the M&Ms. Store the muddy buddies in an airtight container at room temperature until ready to serve.
