Double Chocolate Waffles made completely from scratch with cocoa powder and chocolate chips. Perfect waffle recipe for breakfast or dessert!
What are Double Chocolate Waffles?
Double Chocolate Waffles are made with all of the regular waffle ingredients (flour, eggs, salt, etc), but are made even better with buttermilk, cocoa powder and semi-sweet chocolate chips.
ARE CHOCOLATE WAFFLES A DESSERT OR A BREAKFAST FOOD?
Honestly, they could easily be both! Everyone loves chocolate anytime! Serve your chocolate waffles for breakfast with fresh fruit and yogurt, or serve them as a dessert with a nice scoop of your favorite vanilla ice cream! Either way is absolutely delicious.
What kind of syrup goes well with chocolate waffles?
Our favorite Butter Syrup pairs well with any type of waffles, so that’s always a good choice. I really love serving chocolate waffles with raspberry syrup though.
To make raspberry syrup, thaw 2 cups of frozen raspberries, but don’t drain. Place the berries in a blender and process until smooth. Press berries through a fine-mesh strainer and discard the seeds. Cook and stir juice over medium heat until heated through. Stir in 1 cup of maple syrup and set aside.
I also really love to serve these chocolate waffles with a scoop of vanilla yogurt with some raspberries or strawberries on top. Or heat up some chocolate syrup and really enjoy your breakfast!
Ingredients in Double Chocolate Waffles
Flour – You’ll need all-purpose flour for this recipe, but I think oat flour or even wheat flour would probably work pretty well too!
Sugar – Just a few tablespoons of sugar add the right amount of sweetness to the waffles to balance out the bitterness of the cocoa.
Cocoa powder – A half cup of cocoa powder is what transforms these waffles into chocolate!
Baking powder and baking soda – These are the leavening agents in the waffles and they will give them the right consistency, so make sure your baking powder and baking soda aren’t stale or expired!
Salt – A teaspoon of salt will help all of the other flavors to pop.
Eggs – You will need 3 large eggs for the waffles. Make sure to slightly beat them with a fork before adding them to the batter.
Butter – Melt half a stick of butter and let it cool for a few minutes before adding to the recipe.
Vanilla extract – The higher the quality of the vanilla, the better.
Buttermilk – You will need 2 cups of buttermilk to provide the liquid for the waffles. Buttermilk does make waffles a little bit softer, so if you like crispy waffles, you can use regular milk instead.
Semi-sweet chocolate chips – Add some chocolate chips into the batter to provide the “double” chocolate in the double chocolate waffles.
How to make Double Chocolate Waffles
Preheat waffle iron according to the manufacturer’s directions. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, salt and baking soda.
In another bowl, beat together the eggs and melted butter and vanilla, and then add the buttermilk. Add the wet ingredients to the dry and then stir in the chocolate chips just until combined. Allow to rest for 5 minutes.
Ladle the recommended amount of waffle batter onto the center of the iron. Most round waffle makers require about 3/4 cup of batter. Cook until waffle is crispy on both sides and is easily removed from iron. Serve immediately or keep warm in a 200° oven until ready to serve.

HOW DO I GET A CRISPY WAFFLE?
With a simple ingredient swap you can create a crisper waffle as an end result. Using regular milk instead of buttermilk will make the waffle crispy instead of soft. If you like crispy waffles, you can also cook the waffle in the waffle maker a little bit longer than usual.
WHAT’S A GOOD BUTTERMILK SUBSTITUTE?
If you don’t have any buttermilk handy, you can easily make your own substitute. Simply use 1 cup of milk and 1 tbsp of lemon juice. Mix them in a separate bowl and let them sit for 5-10 minutes before using. The results will be similar, but not exactly the same as there is no true replacement for buttermilk.
HOW CAN I SAVE WAFFLES FOR LATER?
The waffles can be cooled completely and then stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week, or they can be frozen. To freeze them, simply let them freeze solid on a baking sheet (about an hour) and then transfer to an airtight container or baggy for up to 3 months. Reheat and serve. You can reheat the waffles in the oven or in a microwave, but my favorite way to reheat frozen waffles is in the toaster. This way they don’t get soggy and they warm up while retaining their crisp texture!

These waffles are incredibly tart. There is no sweetness to the flavor! Pure cocoa powder flavor. I even used milk chocolate chips. After the first set of waffles was done and I taste tested one, I threw it all away. I really hope this recipe is revised soon, the texture of the waffle was great.

Sorry to hear that you didn’t like this recipe. Not sure what went wrong, but sometimes improperly mixing baking soda into a batter can cause waffles to turn out bitter tasting.
