We love the original Muddy Buddy recipe, and have created quite a few variations of this delicious snack. I think this Cookies and Cream version might be my favorite! In less than 10 minutes, you’ve got an amazing treat that is perfect for parties – it makes a lot!
WHAT ARE MUDDY BUDDIES?
The term Muddy Buddies refers to a snack known by many names, most commonly referred to as puppy chow! The basic muddy buddy recipe is a simple combination of Chex cereal, peanut butter, melted chocolate, and powdered sugar (plus a few other basic ingredients).
COOKIES AND CREAM MUDDY BUDDIES
This version of Muddy Buddies is made with Chex cereal, melted semi-sweet chocolate, white chocolate, powdered sugar and crushed Oreos. Half of the cereal is coated with white chocolate and powdered sugar, and the other half is coated with semi-sweet chocolate, powdered sugar and Oreo crumbs. You only need about 10 minutes to make this delicious recipe that works as both a snack and a dessert.
Ingredients in Cookies and Cream Muddy Buddies
Chex cereal – The main ingredient in muddy buddies is Chex cereal. I usually use the Rice Chex, but Corn Chex or Wheat Chex both work too! The last time I was at the store, I saw Chocolate Chex and plan to try that next!
Chocolate chips – You will need 1 cup of white chocolate chips and 1 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips.
Powdered sugar – You will need this to coat the cereal after mixing with the melted chocolate.
Oreo cookies – You will need 24 Oreo cookies. 12 of them will be completely crushed into fine crumbs and the other 12 will be more roughly chopped to mix in at the end.
How to make Cookies and Cream Muddy Buddies
Divide the cereal evenly into two gallon-sized Ziploc bags.
CRUSH THE OREOS
Make the Oreo crumbs by adding half of the cookies to the food processor and process until they turn into crumbs, about 30 seconds, then set aside until needed. Place the other half of the Oreo cookies in a Ziplock bag, seal the bag (making sure all the air is out of it), and then use your hands or a rolling pin to crush the cookies. You don’t want fine crumbs, so don’t get too carried away with the crushing!
WHITE CHOCOLATE
Melt the white chocolate in the microwave in 30 second intervals, stirring between each interval until chocolate is melted and smooth. Pour it on top of the cereal in one of the bags and shake the bag vigorously until all of the cereal is coated.
Then pour 1 cup of powdered sugar into the bag with the white chocolate coated Chex and shake again until evenly coated.
SEMI-SWEET CHOCOLATE
Melt the semi-sweet chocolate in the microwave in 30 second intervals, stirring between each interval until chocolate is melted and smooth. Pour it on top of the cereal in one of the bags and shake the bag vigorously until all of the cereal is coated.
Add the remaining ½ cup powdered sugar and finely crushed Oreo crumbs into the bag with the semi-sweet chocolate, and shake again until evenly coated.
PUT IT ALL TOGETHER
Pour both bags of cereal into a large bowl together with the roughly chopped Oreos and enjoy! You can serve immediately or save to eat later. Make sure the muddy buddies have completely cooled before storing in an airtight container or bag.

CAN I FREEZE MUDDY BUDDIES?
Muddy Buddies are freezer friendly! Simply make them and let them set (about an hour). Store the cereal mix in an airtight container in the freezer for up to a few weeks. Thaw on the counter and then do a second round of powdered sugar coating and they’ll taste as good as new!
ARE MUDDY BUDDIES GLUTEN FREE?
Chex cereal is gluten-free, so muddy buddies are a great choice for a gluten free snack. Just make sure that you use gluten-free Oreo cookies for the recipe as well. (Some gluten-free substitutes don’t really taste very good, but gluten-free Oreos taste pretty much identical to the real thing!)
CAN I MAKE MUDDY BUDDIES IN ADVANCE?
These muddy buddies last just as long as regular muddy buddies, so feel free to make them up to a week ahead of time. They may last up to 2 weeks, but depending on how many times the container (or bag) gets opened, they may start to become stale after a week.
WHY IS IT CALLED PUPPY CHOW?
Muddy buddies are often called puppy chow simply because of the rather unusual appearance of the cereal once mixed together. It kinda looks like dry dog food! As unappealing as that may seem, this cereal mix has nothing to do with actual dog food, and dogs shouldn’t eat it either! It’s strictly for human consumption and tastes incredible.
