WHAT IS A DUMP CAKE?
A dump cake is the term given to a cake that is assembled and baked in the same dish. This cake is a dump cake because you “almost literally” dump ingredients into a baking dish and bake it. It can also be considered a type of cobbler as well.
There is not a clear determination of how the first dump cake was created, but we can say it was somewhere around 1980 that there was a first reference to it. It all started with crushed pineapple, cherry pie filling and a box of yellow cake mix. Duncan Hines published a recipe in a holiday baking catalogue, and the rest is history! We have all been enjoying these sensational cakes ever since!

INGREDIENTS IN CARAMEL APPLE DUMP CAKE
Cake mix – The recipe calls for a box of yellow cake mix, but you could use a white cake mix or even a spice cake mix if you prefer.
Apple pie filling – You will need three 20 ounce cans of apple pie filling. Just open the cans and dump them all in the pan!
Butter – You will need a cup of butter, or 2 sticks. Use cold butter so that you can slice it up into 1/4″ slices.
Caramel sauce – Use any kind of caramel sauce you like. You can usually find caramel topping near all of the other ice cream toppings at the store. If you’d like, you can even make a homemade caramel sauce!
Cinnamon – Cinnamon goes so well with the apples!
Pecans – The chopped pecans are completely optional, and you can easily swap them out with walnuts if you’d like.
HOW TO MAKE CARAMEL APPLE DUMP CAKE
Preheat oven to 350°. Grease a 9×13 baking dish.
Pour the apple pie filling into the baking dish and evenly spread across the bottom. Sprinkle with cinnamon and then drizzle the caramel sauce evenly on top of the pie filling.
Pour an even layer of cake mix over top – DO NOT MIX! Resist the temptation to mix the cake mix in. It will not bake properly if you do, I promise! Level the cake mix with the back of a spoon.
Top with pecans if desired.
Evenly distribute the slices of butter over the entire cake.
Bake 45-50 minutes or until top is golden brown and pie filling is bubbling up. If the top starts to brown too quickly, cover it loosely with aluminum foil.

CAN I USE A DIFFERENT TYPE OF BOXED CAKE MIX AND FRUIT?
Absolutely! One of the best things about dump cakes is how versatile they are. You can use any cake mix and any type of pie filling you’d like. I think that the caramel and cinnamon would pair very well with peaches, but if you use strawberry or cherry pie filling, you may want to leave those ingredients out.
HOW LONG IS CARAMEL APPLE DUMP CAKE GOOD FOR?
This cake can be kept stored in a tightly sealed container for up to 3-4 days at room temperature, but you can also store it in the fridge if desired.
CAN I REHEAT CARAMEL APPLE DUMP CAKE?
Yes, this cake can be reheated if you find that you enjoy it best when warm and gooey. Go ahead and place a serving-sized portion on a plate and microwave it for about 20-30 seconds until warmed through. Larger portions can be reheated in a baking dish in the oven for a few minutes.
