WHAT IS A DUMP CAKE?
A dump cake is the term given to a cake that is assembled and baked in the same dish. This cake is a dump cake because you “almost literally” dump ingredients into a baking dish and bake it. It can also be considered a type of cobbler as well.
There is not a clear determination of how the first dump cake was created, but we can say it was somewhere around 1980 that there was a first reference to it. It all started with crushed pineapple, cherry pie filling and a box of yellow cake mix. Duncan Hines published a recipe in a holiday baking catalogue, and the rest is history! We have all been enjoying these sensational cakes ever since!

INGREDIENTS IN STRAWBERRY CREAM CHEESE DUMP CAKE
White cake mix – The white cake mix pairs perfectly with the strawberry pie filling, but you could use yellow cake mix or even chocolate cake mix if you want to change up the flavors a little bit. Even lemon would be fantastic!
Butter – You will need 1 stick of butter to melt and mix with the cake mix to sprinkle over the top of the other ingredients.
Strawberry pie filling – You will need 2 cans of strawberry pie filling, or 5-6 cups of homemade pie filling.
Whipped cream cheese – Whipped cream cheese works better in this cake, but if you only have regular cream cheese, you can whip it up for a couple of minutes with an electric mixer.

TIPS AND TRICKS FOR MAKING STRAWBERRY CREAM CHEESE DUMP CAKE
Full instructions on how to make the recipe can be found on the recipe card below, but here are a few helpful tips.
- Use whipped cream cheese for easy spreading: It blends better into the filling and gives a light, creamy texture.
- Mix the butter and cake mix thoroughly: This ensures a consistent crumbly topping with no dry patches.
- Try it with other flavors: Mix and match cake mix and pie filling flavors—lemon cake with blueberry filling or chocolate cake with cherry are both amazing combos.
- Let it cool slightly: The filling sets up as it cools, making it easier to serve.

Storage Tips
Store leftover dump cake covered at room temperature for up to 3–4 days. You can also refrigerate it for longer freshness. To reheat, microwave individual portions for 20–30 seconds, or warm in a low oven until heated through.

FAQs
Can I use a different cake mix?
Yes! White cake mix is classic, but lemon, yellow, or even chocolate cake mix pairs beautifully with strawberry filling.
Can I use homemade strawberry filling?
Absolutely. Just make sure to use 5–6 cups of thick, sweetened strawberry filling so it bakes up nicely.
Do I have to use whipped cream cheese?
Whipped is easier to dollop and melts better during baking. If you have regular cream cheese, whip it with a mixer before adding.

Can I make this ahead of time?
Yes, you can assemble it a few hours ahead and refrigerate before baking. Leftovers also reheat well in the microwave or oven.
Can I serve it cold?
Yes, it’s delicious warm or cold—but it’s especially gooey and comforting served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

It would be helpful if you showed TWO cans of pie filling in the photos. Here I was at the store buying the stuff and not wanting to scroll through hundreds of lines of narrative to get down the bottom of the screen to read the actual recipe list. The beginning of the post says “four ingredients” and I buy all 4 things shown in the picture and think I’m good to go. Then I try to make it and find out that you need 5 things total. Unfortunately, I live in a remote location and couldn’t just run to a nearby store and grab another can.
I realize putting 2 cans in the photo might “ruin your aesthetic” but seriously do people a favor and change the pictures on your post – maybe it will save the next person from making the same mistake.

So sorry for the confusion! Thanks for your feedback – we will definitely keep it in mind.

I have whole frozen strawberries. Do you think I need to include jell like in pie filling or just sweeten them?
Jessica says
they’d probably give off enough liquid to work!
