Banana Split Hot Chocolate tastes just like your favorite banana split dessert, but in a mug! Made with hot cocoa mix, bananas, whipped cream, cherries and nuts.
Anyone else feeling pretty cold these days? It’s been snowy and freezing throughout most of the country and when it’s cold outside, I need to eat or drink something warm in order to fully warm up. I love hot chocolate and I love this version because it is simple, but really does taste just like a banana split!
What is Banana Split Hot Chocolate?
Banana Split Hot Chocolate is made by blending milk, cocoa mix, bananas and strawberry syrup together. The mixture is heated up and then topped with whipped cream, chocolate syrup, cherries and chopped walnuts.
Ingredients in Banana Split Hot Chocolate
Milk – You can use any type of milk you have on hand! Regular milk, almond milk, rice milk – it all works great!
Hot cocoa mix – You will probably want to use a chocolate hot cocoa mix. Some other varieties would work really well though too, like caramel or a white chocolate or even one with marshmallows.
Banana – You will need one large banana sliced up to make 4 servings of hot chocolate. You can definitely use more bananas if you want more banana flavor.
Strawberry flavored syrup – Strawberry syrup adds such a delicious flavor to the hot chocolate. You can absolutely add other syrups too…maybe caramel, pineapple, marshmallow, etc.
Whipped cream – Can’t have banana splits without whipped cream! You can whip your own, but it’s much easier to use the kind you spray out of the can.
Chocolate flavored syrup – You’ll need chocolate syrup to drizzle on top of the whipped cream. Hot fudge works well too!
Maraschino cherries – Another important ingredient in banana splits! Top each mug of hot chocolate with a cherry…or two or three!
Walnuts – Sprinkle some chopped walnuts on top, or leave them off if you prefer.

What type of Hot Cocoa mix is best?
You’ll want to use a chocolate hot cocoa mix for this recipe, unless you want to get a little more creative with your flavor combinations. Mint Banana Splits anyone? We really love Stephen’s hot cocoa but there are a lot of different brands that are delicious too. I just recently realized that you can buy packets of Starbucks hot cocoa and that is pretty fabulous as well.
What kind of milk to use in hot chocolate?
Any type of milk works great with hot chocolate! Regular milk, almond milk, rice milk…it all works great! If you want extra creamy and rich hot chocolate, you can even use half and half. I really like to use vanilla flavored almond or rice milk in hot chocolate because of the extra vanilla flavor. Use skim milk to save on calories and fat…the other flavors definitely make up for it!
