Ingredients in Peanut Butter Cup Brownie Trifle
Brownie mix – Most brownie mixes are about 18 ounces, give or take an ounce or two. You will follow the directions for an 8X8 or 9X9 pan.
Eggs – You will need 2 eggs for most brownie mixes. If the box indicates differently, follow the box!
Water – Again, follow the directions on the box, but most brownie mixes require 3 tablespoons of water to provide some of the moisture needed.
Oil – You can use vegetable or coconut oil for the oil needed to add to the brownie mix. I often use coconut oil – it works great! Just make sure it is melted before you add it to the mix.
Reese’s peanut butter cups – You will need 9 regular sized peanut butter cups to bake into the brownies.
Heavy whipping cream – A cup of whipping cream will be whipped into providing the whipped cream for the trifle. If you prefer, you can use Cool Whip topping instead.
Bananas – Slice up 3 bananas to layer in the trifle. The flavor of the bananas goes so well with the chocolate, peanut butter and caramel.
Caramel sauce – The recipe calls for 6 tablespoons of caramel sauce (ice cream topping), but you can absolutely use as much as you’d like!
Roasted peanuts – The recipe calls for 6 tablespoons of chopped, unsalted, roasted peanuts. That is about 1/4-1/3 cup, but again, you can use as much as you’d like!
How to make Peanut Butter Cup Brownie Trifle
Prep
Preheat the oven according to the brownie mix instructions. Lightly coat an 8X8 inch square pan with cooking spray and then line with parchment paper. Spray the parchment paper with cooking spray also.
(I did this, but I think if you sprayed the pan enough, you could probably skip the parchment paper. It does make it easy to lift the brownies from the pan, but you will be cutting them up in small pieces for the trifle anyways, so it doesn’t matter if they come out perfectly!)
Make brownies
Prepare the brownie batter according to package directions. Place half the batter in the pan, and then top with peanut butter cups, gently pressing them down. Cover the cups with the other half of the batter and bake according to package directions. Cool.
Transfer the brownies to a cutting board and cut into 1/2 inch squares. (The original directions said you only need about half the brownies, but use as much as you want!)
Make whipped cream
Beat the whipping cream with an electric mixer until medium-stiff peaks form. Typically, whipping cream in desserts needs to be sweetened up a little bit, but it isn’t necessary in this recipe because there is so much other sweetness in this dessert! If you want to sweeten it up a little bit, you can add 1/4 cup of powdered sugar before whipping the cream.
Assemble
To assemble the trifle, layer brownies, bananas, whipping cream and then caramel. I did two layers of each and then sprinkled some of the peanuts on the top. You can either make about 8-10 individual trifles or put all of the ingredients into a large trifle bowl.
When to Serve Peanut Butter Cup Brownie Trifle
This dessert is perfect to serve up for any occasion (or no occasion at all!) If you’ve ever had a craving for some peanut butter and chocolate, then you already know what I’m talking about. Make a nice batch of this trifle and enjoy it whenever the mood strikes, or make a large container full for your next party, get-together, or BBQ where a cold dessert is welcomed. Either way, it won’t last long!

CAN YOU MAKE BROWNIE TRIFLE IN ADVANCE?
I usually make this trifle within a couple of hours of serving so that the bananas stay fresh. If you leave the bananas out, you can make the trifle 2-3 days before serving. If you need to make the trifle in advance and you want the bananas, you can just slice and add them on top right before serving.
HOW TO MAKE WHIPPED CREAM
Whipped cream is absolutely delicious in brownie trifle. Usually whipped cream needs to be sweetened, but in this recipe, you can just whip the cream without adding anything since there is so much sweetness in the rest of the trifle ingredients. But if you’d like to add some sweetness, you can add up to 1/4 cup of powdered sugar to the whipped cream.
Pour heavy cream into mixing bowl. (To speed up the process, place a metal mixing bowl in the freezer for about 30 minutes before putting the cream in.) Mix using a stand mixer or hand mixer for 3-4 minutes at medium high – high speed, until mixture thickens. When you pull the whisk up, the cream should form peaks that maintain their shape.
If you want to add some sweetness, add the powdered sugar and then mix for another minute.
