Variations and Substitutions for Sausage Pasta
- Meat options: If you’re not a fan of sausage, feel free to substitute it with ground beef, ground turkey, or even chopped chicken. For a vegetarian version, you can use mushrooms, tofu, or plant-based sausage crumbles.
- Spaghetti type: While this recipe calls for regular spaghetti, you can experiment with different types of pasta such as linguine, fettuccine, or penne. You can also try whole wheat or gluten-free pasta for a healthier alternative.
- Add-ins: To add more flavor and nutrition, consider adding some vegetables such as spinach, broccoli, or bell peppers. You can also add some herbs and spices such as basil, oregano, or red pepper flakes for a kick of heat.
Creamy Sausage Pasta Ingredients
Sausage: Use one package of 4, of the chicken and apple sausages for delicious flavor in this dish. If you are not a fan of that flavor, use whatever one you prefer or have on hand.
Onion: Adding ½ cup of diced onion will add a nice subtle sweet flavor to this pasta.
Sun-Dried Tomatoes: You need a ¼ cup of sun-dried tomatoes, that have been diced into small pieces. You can use the dry packaged ones, or the ones found in jars of oil, whichever you prefer.
Garlic: For more great taste, add 1 teaspoon of minced garlic.
Olive Oil: You will need 2-3 tablespoons of olive oil to cook everything in.
Spaghetti: The base of this pasta meal is one 12-ounce box of spaghetti noodles. We used Barilla® Gluten Free Spaghetti, but you can use any variety you have on hand or prefer.
Spinach: Adding 1 cup of fresh spinach will give this dish a nice burst of green color and some great health benefits too.
Chicken broth: You need 5 cups of chicken broth to cook the noodles in.
Heavy cream: Use ¼ cup of heavy cream to create a wonderful creamy and delicious sauce.
Cream cheese: Help create a thick, rich sauce by adding 4-oz of cubed cream cheese.
Parmesan cheese: No Alfredo styled sauce is complete without a little parmesan! Use ½ cup of parmesan cheese to achieve that classic taste.
How to make Creamy Sausage Spaghetti
Prep
Start by slicing the sausages into round slices about ½-¾” thick.
Then dice the onions, chop the tomatoes, and mince the garlic. Have all the ingredients ready to go so it’s more convenient, as this recipe moves quickly.
Begin Cooking
Next begin heating the olive oil into a large saucepan over medium heat. Once heated, add in the onions, tomatoes, garlic, and sausage. Cook for about 5 minutes or until the onions are soft.
Then add in the spinach leaves, pasta, and chicken broth. Increase the heat to high and stir often, breaking up the pasta as you go to prevent sticking.
Bring the broth to a boil and then decrease the heat to medium. Set a timer for 9 minutes, continue to cook, while stirring often. Most of the broth should be absorbed by the pasta noodles.
Create Sauce
Once the 9 minutes are up, remove the pan from the heat and immediately stir in the heavy cream and cubed cream cheese. Stir to incorporate until the sauce is smooth.
Top with parmesan cheese and some fresh basil, if desired. Serve immediately and enjoy!
