Vanilla Butterfly Cupcakes topped with whipped cream and colorful candies. Easily make these perfect spring butterfly cupcakes for any occasion!
These butterfly cupcakes are so pretty that you may not want to eat them once you’re done. They’re so simple to make and I love that they’re a lighter dessert. Everyone smiles when they see these simple desserts!
The butterfly cupcake toppers are made using the tops of the cupcakes as wings, and a nice heavy whipped cream to position them in flight. This leaves you with a soft and light cupcake that can easily fool you into eating several in one sitting.
Easy Butterfly Cupcakes
Making this recipe is so easy a kid can do it! In fact, it’d make for a fun activity at your next child’s birthday party or a Spring event like Easter. Pre-bake the cupcakes and let the kids do the rest, you’ll see them bring out their inner chefs and artists as they create unique and delicious butterflies.
Do I Have To Use a White Box Cake Mix?
Absolutely not. You can use a homemade white cake cupcake recipe or switch out the box cake mix for a different flavor. These spring butterfly cupcakes would be incredible with any box mix. Making lemon butterfly cupcakes or even strawberry butterfly cupcakes is a great way to bring out more color and add some spring flavors!
What Sprinkles Should I Use?
The sprinkles that you add are completely up to you! I recommend candy coated chocolate candies like Sixlets or even colorful M&M’s. This is a great way to add more color to fit any color scheme. Pink and yellow are both perfect colors for spring. I find small packages of individual colors of Sixlets-type candies at Walmart on both the baking aisle and on the cake decorating aisle.
Butterfly Cupcakes Ingredients

-Powdered Sugar
-15.25 oz box of white cake mix or homemade white cake cupcakes

How to Make Butterfly Cupcakes
Make your cupcakes as directed on your packaged box, or your homemade recipe.
When the cupcakes are completely cooled, cut off the tops and set them aside.
Put your whipped cream on the top of the cupcakes.
Take the tops of your cupcakes, and slice them in half so that they are two half circles.
Place each half on the whipped cream at an angle.
Using a sieve/sifter, dust some powdered sugar on the tops of the cupcakes.
Add any sprinkles that you’d like.
Serve immediately. Store leftover cupcakes and whipped cream separately, then assemble butterflies just before serving.
How to make Whipped Cream
I recommend you stabilize the whipped cream for use in these cupcakes. I show you how to make whipped cream using 3 easy methods here.

How long do butterfly cupcakes last?
Not long! Unfortunately, due to the whipped cream, these cupcakes are best eaten ASAP. Letting them sit around for too long will allow the whipped cream to melt or make the cupcakes soggy. They’ll still taste good but may not look as pretty as they did when freshly made. For this reason, I don’t recommend making them more than an hour or two before a party.
Can I make butterfly cupcakes in advance?
You can make your cupcakes long in advance, and keep them stored in an airtight container or Ziploc bag for a few days before the party (or weeks if you keep them in the freezer). Make your whipped cream topping no more than 24 hours in advance, and keep stored in a covered bowl in the fridge. Stir before using to help reincorporate any loose liquids and make it smooth.
How should I apply the whipped cream?
Spooning the whipped cream on top of the cupcakes is an option, but using a frosting piping bag and wide tip (or even a sandwich bag with the corner cut off) could be a much easier and less messy way to get the whipped cream piled on there.
