Birthday Cake Lush is a no bake dessert made with crushed Oreos, pudding, sweet cream and cake mix! Full of that cake batter flavor, this sweet, creamy layered dessert is perfect for any celebration!
Lush Desserts
Lush desserts are a really popular layered no bake dessert that come in endless flavor combinations. A typical lush dessert have a few things in common despite the final flavor. The majority are made up of 4 basic layers:
- No Bake Cookie Crumb Crust
- Sweet whipped Cream Cheese layer
- Pudding layer
- Whipped topping layer on top
Like I said, there are endless combinations to these basic layers! Lemon Lush and Chocolate Lush are very popular desserts. I think a chocolate raspberry lush would be absolutely magical! For this Lush dessert, we are focusing on that super sweet, full of sprinkles, funfetti or cake batter flavor. This is perfect birthdays, graduations or any sort of celebration!
Ingredients for Birthday Cake Layered Dessert
- Golden Oreos- This will be used for the crust of the lush. Leave that yummy filling inside! I like to use a blender or food processor to make the cookie crumbs but feel free to place them into a baggie and smash them with a rolling pin.
- Butter- Melted butter to be specific! This is used to bring those cookie crumbs together for the crust.
- Cream Cheese- We will need the cream cheese room temperature, so when you’ll your whipped topping out of the freezer, take the cream cheese out of the fridge.
- Whipped Topping- The whipped topping will be divided and used for two parts of this dessert. Half of it will go into the cream cheese layer and the other half will be reserved for the top of the lush dessert.
- Funfetti Cake Mix- This is how we get the iconic birthday cake flavor! The cake mix (just the powder!) will be added to both the cream cheese and pudding layer.
- Vanilla Pudding- Make sure to grab the instant pudding mix at the grocery store!
- Milk- We will use the milk to mix together the pudding.
- Sprinkles- Totally optional, but I love adding extra sprinkles!
How to make a Layered Lush Dessert
Making a lush dessert really doesn’t take all that much time or work. If you can operate an electric hand mixer, you’re golden!! One thing to note, this recipe will make an 8×8 pan of Birthday Cake Lush but can easily be doubled to make a 9×13 pan!
The Crust: To make the crust, combine the cookie crumbs with the melted butter and press into the bottom of your pan. I like to use the back of a measuring cup to help press and pack the crust tightly.
Cream Cheese Layer: To make the cream cheese layer, combine the cream cheese and whipped topping until smooth. Then slowly add in the funfetti cake mix and whip with a high speed until nice and smooth. Spread the cream cheese layer on top of the crust.
Pudding Layer: The pudding layer is mixed together by first whisking together the pudding mix and milk and letting it sit until it has thickened up slightly. Then, slowly beat in the funfetti cake mix until it is smooth. At this point, the pudding should be pretty thick. Spread this on top of the cream cheese layer.
Whipped Topping Layer: Finally, spread the rest of the whipped topping onto the top of the pudding.
Now it is time to refrigerate or a few hours before cutting and serving. Make sure to store in the fridge before and immediately after serving. This dessert will keep fresh in the fridge for 3-4 days which means this dessert is perfect to make the day before your big celebration.

What about the raw flour in the cake mix?
Consuming raw flour should always be avoided for food safety reasons, which is why I recommend toasting your cake mix before using. This makes the no-bake dessert safe to consume without raw flour risks. Simply spread the mix onto a baking sheet and bake at 350F degrees for 5 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool completely before using as directed.
How long is lush cake good for?
Lush cakes are good for about 3-4 days in the fridge if you keep them well covered. I don’t recommend letting them last any longer than that because the ingredients begin to separate.
