Pineapple Salsa made with fresh pineapple, tomatoes, red onion and bell peppers. This easy salsa recipe is fresh, flavorful and absolutely perfect for a weekend BBQ or weeknight meal.
We love traditional salsa, but we also love to change up the flavor a little bit. There really isn’t much better than fresh salsa! Pineapple Salsa pairs well with tacos, chicken, or pork, and is absolutely delicious as a dip for tortilla chips. Chop up some fresh pineapple and veggies and the salsa is ready to eat within just a few minutes.
WHAT IS PINEAPPLE SALSA?
Pineapple Salsa has many of the same ingredients as traditional salsa – tomatoes, onions, peppers, cilantro, salt and lime. Adding diced pineapple to the salsa adds a delicious sweetness and flavor to the salsa that makes it an incredible garnish for tacos, chicken or pork and it tastes delicious to eat plain with chips too!
INGREDIENTS IN PINEAPPLE SALSA
Pineapple – This is the star ingredient in the recipe! I prefer to use fresh pineapple, but you could definitely use canned pineapple if you prefer. Either way, you’ll need to dice the pineapple before adding to the salsa.
Tomato – You will also need diced tomatoes in the salsa. Again, I prefer fresh tomatoes in salsa, but you can use canned ones if you’d like.
Onion – You will need ¼ cup of diced onion. Red onions are the best variety of onions for this salsa recipe.
Orange bell pepper – Not only are the flavors in the orange peppers perfect for the salsa, but the color of the orange peppers is so pretty with the other ingredients!
Cilantro – Another classic salsa ingredient. Fresh cilantro is absolutely delicious with the other ingredients. You’ll need about 1/3 cup of chopped cilantro. Feel free to use a little less or a little more depending on your preference.
Salt and pepper – Just a little bit of salt and pepper will really help to flavor the salsa and also help all of the other flavors to pop.
Lime juice – You can use fresh lime juice or the kind from a bottle. Either way, the lime juice adds another little splash of flavor to the salsa. So yummy!
Serrano pepper – This is the ingredient that adds a little bit of heat to the salsa. The recipe only calls for a little bit, so the salsa really won’t be too spicy. If you want less heat, you can swap out the serrano pepper with a jalapeno or you can leave out the peppers entirely!
HOW TO MAKE PINEAPPLE SALSA
Dice the pineapple in small pieces until you have the required amount (1 3/4 cup). Go ahead and save the rest of the pineapple for another recipe, or save it to eat later!
In a small bowl, mix together diced pineapple, tomatoes, chili, red onion, pepper, salt, pepper, lime juice, and cilantro. Stir until well combined.
Store in the refrigerator until ready to serve. Serve chilled or at room temperature. I actually prefer to make the salsa a day ahead of when I’ll be serving it so that the flavors have time to meld, but you can eat the salsa immediately after making it too!

CAN YOU USE ANY TOMATOES FOR SALSA?
The best kinds of tomatoes you can use for salsa are the ones you have on hand! Ha! I use any kind of tomato. My favorite store-bought tomatoes are the red on the vine tomatoes because I think they have great flavor. Roma tomatoes have fewer seeds, so they’re also popular because you use more of each tomato.
CAN YOU USE DRIED CILANTRO IN SALSA?
Dried cilantro, also called coriander is not a good option for salsa because it just doesn’t have enough flavor. You’ll want to use fresh cilantro for this salsa recipe!
How to make salsa less spicy
This salsa recipe isn’t super spicy, but does have a little bit of a kick because of the serrano pepper. If you prefer less spicy, you can swap out the serrano with a jalapeno pepper, or you can leave it out completely. On the flip side, you can always crank up the heat by adding more serrano or jalapeno or both!
Can I use a blender to make salsa?
This salsa recipe calls for dicing of all the fruits and veggies to produce a more chunky salsa. If you prefer a smoother salsa without the chunks, you can easily throw all of the ingredients into a food processor or blender and pulse until at the desired consistency.
