Homemade Whole Wheat Graham Crackers
In my quest to cut down on processed foods, I have been trying to make more of our snacks. I admit I had never tried to make crackers before, but the results of this recipe was amazing! It isn’t quite as easy as buying a box of crackers at the store, but it didn’t take very long and my kids had a fun time helping. Not only that, but your home will smell incredible as they bake! Give these homemade graham crackers a try, you might not ever go back to the store bought version!
Why You’ll Love This Homemade Cracker Recipe
Here are a few great reasons to try this recipe soon!
- It’s easy to make. This recipe comes together pretty quick and easily by just mixing some ingredients together. After that, it does take a little patience to allow the dough to chill, but the effort of waiting is totally worth it.
- Uses simple ingredients. We don’t need anything too fancy. Just some basic pantry staples like flour, baking soda, butter, and brown sugar will do fine. You might not even need a trip to the store for anything, how amazing does that sound?!
- You can change up the shapes. While graham crackers from a box come in a rectangle and square shape, when you make them at home, you can customize the shapes with a cookie cutter, pizza cutter, or any sharp knife. Fun for making your crackers more unique.
Honey Graham Crackers Ingredients
Flour– You will need 1 ½ cups of all purpose flour and 1 cup of whole wheat flour to be the structure of this graham cracker dough.
Baking soda– Adding in ½ teaspoon of baking soda will help the dough puff up nicely as they bake.
Salt– You will need ½ teaspoon of salt to help balance all the flavors in this recipe well.
Cinnamon– You’ll need ¼ teaspoon of ground cinnamon to give these crackers a nice warm taste.
Milk– Adding in ¼ cup of milk is necessary to get the dough to the right consistency.
Vanilla extract– Use 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract to enhance all the wonderful flavors in this cracker recipe.
Butter– Use ½ cup (one stick) of softened butter to give the crackers the right moisture consistency so that they melt in your mouth and don’t feel dry.
Brown sugar- You’ll want ¾ cups of packed light brown sugar for a nice sweet depth of flavor.
Honey– To give these crackers a taste of honey in every bite, you will need 3 tablespoons of honey.
How to Make Homemade Honey Graham Crackers
Dough
In a large bowl, mix the flour, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon together to combine.
Next, in a separate bowl, combine the milk and vanilla extract.
After that, in a third bowl, using an electric mixer, beat the softened butter, brown sugar, and honey for about 3 minutes until nice and smooth.
After that, add some of the flour mixture and a little bit of the milk mixture, to the butter mixture and beat to combine. Continue to alternate, mixing in the flour and milk mixture, mixing between each addition, until all ingredients have been added.
Mix ingredients until the dough is smooth and shiny. (My dough was still a little crumbly, but then I used my hands to finish combining it, and it worked out perfectly.)
Roll it out
Proceed to place half of the dough on a large piece of flour-dusted parchment paper.
Lightly dust the dough with flour and roll out until the dough is about 1/8 inch thick. Then do the same thing with the other half of the dough.
Chill
Next, place the parchment paper on a cookie sheet, cover lightly with plastic wrap and then refrigerate the dough for about an hour to chill.
Cut
Using a square cookie cutter (I had several sizes), cut dough into squares and transfer the squares to parchment-lined cookie sheets. Feel free to use or create whatever shape you’d like, have fun with it!
Chill, again
Prick each cracker lightly with a fork and refrigerate for about 30 more minutes until they are firm.
Bake
Get the oven preheating to 350 degrees F. Then place the cookies in the oven and bake for about 15 minutes. Let them cool on the sheets for a few minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
The crackers are delicious and warm, but they are also wonderful completely cooled.
Serve and enjoy!

How long are homemade graham crackers good for?
These crackers can be kept stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to several days. If store properly, they will last 5-7 days.
Should I use salted or unsalted butter?
You can use either one for this recipe, and the tastes should be pretty similar either way. Try the recipe with both and see which one you’d like most! I don’t recommend using margarine though as it doesn’t hold up as well and can cause the graham crackers to turn out soft, or cause them to spread too much.
Are homemade graham crackers healthy?
They’re definitely better for you than the store-bought variety because there are no fillers and added preservatives. We also use whole wheat, which is high in fiber, and real honey, which has some great antioxidant values too. This snack is a healthier way to enjoy your favorite food without worries.
