Garlic Mashed Potatoes made with freshly roasted garlic have so much flavor! Delicious mashed potatoes recipe that yields soft and creamy potatoes every time.
Mashed potatoes are the perfect side dish. We go through a lot of potatoes at our house and I think mashed potatoes are our favorite. They seem so simple to make, but sometimes they turn out a little bit dry or lacking in flavor. We have a tried and true classic Mashed Potato recipe that is absolutely delicious, but if you really love garlic, you’ve got to give this one a try. The potatoes have so much flavor, you don’t even need to serve them with gravy on top!
GARLIC MASHED POTATOES
Mashed Potatoes are fairly simple to make, but a little trickier to make with a lot of flavor! Roasting a bulb of garlic in the oven for about 30 minutes adds so much flavor! After cooking the potatoes, add the freshly roasted garlic along with milk, salt and butter for perfect mashed potatoes. You can serve them with gravy if you’d like, but they are so flavorful, we usually just eat them as is.
Ingredients in Garlic Mashed Potatoes
Garlic – This is the star ingredient in this recipe. Use a whole bulb of garlic to give the mashed potatoes the right amount of flavor.
Olive oil – A little bit of olive oil is needed to coat the bulb of garlic while it is roasting in the oven.
Potatoes – Use Russets or Yukon gold potatoes for best results. Potatoes need to be peeled quartered. If you chop the potatoes in smaller pieces, they will cook more quickly.
Water – You will need water to boil the potatoes. Make sure you have enough to cover the potatoes in your pot.
Milk – The milk will make the potatoes moist and creamy. If you want even richer potatoes, you can use cream in place of the milk.
Salt – Two teaspoons of salt adds a lot of flavor to the potatoes.
Butter – Add the butter on top just before serving. You can’t have potatoes without butter! If you really love butter in potatoes, you can mix another 1/2 cup into the potatoes while mixing in the milk, garlic and salt. When it comes to mashed potatoes, you can’t have too much butter!
Parsley – Chopped parsley is completely optional, but it makes a pretty garnish on top of the potatoes. Sprinkle it on top right before serving.
How to make Garlic Mashed Potatoes
Preheat the oven to 400℉.
ROAST THE GARLIC
Peel only the outer layer from the bulb of garlic, cut off the tip, coat in olive oil and wrap in foil.
Roast the garlic on a cookie sheet for about 30 minutes, or until the cloves are soft, allow to cool.
While the garlic is roasting, peel and quarter the potatoes. (Chop the potatoes in smaller pieces if you want the potatoes to cook more quickly.)
BOIL THE POTATOES
Put the chopped potatoes in a large pot and fill with enough water to cover them completely. Bring water and the potatoes to a boil on the stove over high heat. Simmer them until tender, or until a fork can easily go into them, about 20-30 minutes.
Strain the potatoes and add them to a large bowl.
BLEND THE POTATOES
Squeeze the roasted garlic on top of the potatoes in the bowl, and add the milk and salt.
With a hand mixer, or stand mixer, blend until the mashed potatoes are almost creamy, some chunks are perfectly fine. If you want them perfectly smooth, keep blending to the desired consistency.
Top with softened butter and parsley and serve immediately.
