Cake Mix Donuts with a Donut Pan
If you don’t already own a donut pan you will need one to complete this recipe. I recommend this Donut pan from Amazon. Baking donuts instead of frying them helps to make them a healthier option and keeps them in their traditionally round and fun shape so they’re recognizably a donut. Add sprinkles and frosting to the top as you normally would and enjoy this easy donut recipe with the family.
Cake Mix Donut Ingredients:
-Applesauce: To help bind this cake recipe together you will need 23 ounces of unsweetened apple sauce. This is a small jar and unless you want the cinnamon flavor in your donuts, I recommend sticking with the plain version.
-Cake mix: You will need 1 box of Funfetti flavored cake mix for the base of this cake mix donut recipe.
-Frosting: To keep with the fun theme, use some Funfetti sprinkle frosting or you can use any frosting of choice whether storebought or homemade.
-Cooking spray: You will want to make sure that you have some good nonstick cooking spray on hand to grease the donut pan so that nothing sticks. The better greased the pan is, the easier the donuts pop out without trouble.
How to Make Funfetti Cake Mix Donuts
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F and generously spray your donut pan with cooking spray.
In a medium or large-sized mixing bowl, mix together the cake mix and applesauce until well combined.
Place the batter into a frosting bag and snip the corner to pipe the batter into the donut pan. You want each cavity filled to the top.
Bake in the oven for 22-25 minutes or until a toothpick can be inserted and come out clean.
Remove the donuts from the oven and allow them to cool in the pan for 5 minutes before placing them on a wire cooling rack to cool completely.
Once the donuts are cooled, place your frosting in the microwave-safe bowl and heat for about 45 seconds. Stir and continue to cook for a few seconds at a time if it hasn’t become liquid yet.
Gently dip the tops of the donuts into the melted frosting and allow the excess to drip off of the donuts.
Turn the donuts upright and place them back onto the cooling rack.
Immediately top with sprinkles and repeat until all donuts have been coated and decorated. Enjoy!

I am making these tomorrow, can you point me in the direction of what kind of frosting you used here? This one is just a little drippy but stiff, Id like to replicate that look
Nicole says
Its just canned vanilla frosting (found near the boxed mix cakes in the baking aisle). Remove the foil and lid from the top and place the container into the microwave for 45 seconds. Stir and then drizzle or dip your donuts in it and it will give a nice drip look like what was pictured above 🙂 if needed, you can add another 15 seconds or so to the microwave time to make it more melted if you find that it is too stiff.
