Christmas Muddy Buddies made with Chex cereal, peanut butter, chocolate chips & topped with Mini Oreos, Nutter Butters and M&M’s! A fun & festive holiday version of the popular Muddy Buddy recipe!
Muddy buddies make a great party food because one simple recipe can whip up enough to share with a large group of people. Christmas Muddy Buddies are a perfect addition to the snack table this holiday season.
What are Christmas muddy buddies?
Muddy buddies (or puppy chow) as they’re also known as, are Chex cereal treats coated in peanut butter, chocolate, powdered sugar, and more. With the festive red and green M&Ms, we add a nice festive touch to this simple muddy buddy recipe.
Christmas Muddy Buddy Ingredients
-Chex cereal: We need 9 cups of Chex cereal, you can use any variety you want and can even mix and match. I used 5 cups of peanut butter flavor and 4 cups of the corn variety.
-Chocolate chips: 1 1/2 cups of chocolate chips will add a nice chocolate coating of flavor throughout the snack mix.
-Peanut butter: With 1/2 cup of peanut butter (preferably creamy) we can add a nice salty and savory combination to this sweet mix.
-Butter or margarine: You can use either butter or margarine for this puppy chow recipe, but you’ll need 1/4 cup (half a stick) of whichever one you choose.
-Vanilla: 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract will add a little variety in flavor. Use high quality vanilla for a stronger flavor.
-Powdered sugar: 1 1/2 cups of powdered sugar will help to coat the Chex cereal so that it’s given a nice burst of sweetness the moment it touches your tongue. It also looks like fresh fallen snow which pairs great with the holiday feel we’re looking for.
-Mini oreos: About 4 ounces of mini oreos will help to add a nice variety of flavor in this mix.
-Nutter butters: Another great way to add variety into this mix is by adding 4 ounces of delicious nutter butters.
-M&M’s: We want red and green colored M&M’s for a variety of colorful festive feel. We need about 1 cup of M&M’s to do that.
-Peanut butter chips: Scattering the Chex muddy buddies with 1/2 cup of peanut butter chips will add little speckled bits of smooth and crunchy peanut butter flavor throughout the mix.
How to Make Christmas Muddy Buddies
Place your measured out Chex mix cereal into a large mixing bowl.
In a medium sized bowl, melt the chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter (or margarine) and then microwave on high for 1 minute. Stir well.
Microwave for an additional 30 seconds, and then add in the vanilla and mix again until smooth.
Pour the chocolate mixture over the top of the Chex cereal and stir it together carefully until it’s well mixed.
Pour the chocolate and peanut butter coated Chex mix into a 2 gallon sized Ziploc Bag.
Add the powdered sugar into the bag and then zip the top of it closed.
Shake it well until every piece is nicely coated.
Place the mixture onto a wax paper lined baking sheet. Allow the mixture to cool for 5 minutes.
Add the cooled Chex, the Oreos, Nutter butter, M&M’s, and peanut butter chips into a large mixing bowl and then combine them together well.
Keep the mixture stored in an airtight container. Enjoy!
