What are Black Forest Brownies?
Black Forest Brownies are thick, fudgy, chocolate brownies that have chopped maraschino cherries, white chocolate chips and slivered almonds mixed in. Once the brownies are baked, drizzle a simple cream cheese frosting on top and add a few more cherries too! There is just something so amazing about the combination of cherries and chocolate. I love how simple this brownie recipe is, and I absolutely love that the brownies are packed with so many cherries! An easy way to take brownies up a couple of notches!
What kind of cherries to use in Black Forest Brownies?
I really like to use maraschino cherries in this recipe, but fresh or frozen tart cherries are amazing too! They provide quite a different flavor, so it definitely depends on your preference or what kind of cherries you have on hand. No matter which type of cherry you use, I guarantee your brownies will taste amazing.
Black Forest Brownies Ingredients
Brownie Batter
Maraschino cherries – You will need 2 (10 ounce) jars of maraschino cherries with the stems removed. You can use fresh or frozen tart cherries if you prefer instead!
Semisweet chocolate chips – Using 1 cup of chocolate chips will give these brownies a ton of wonderful chocolatey flavor. You can also use dark chocolate if you prefer.
Butter – You will add 1/2 cup butter to the chocolate chips when you melt it down. Using real butter works and tastes the best!
Eggs – 3 large eggs will bind everything together and help to provide the soft, chewy texture for the brownies.
Sugar – Adding in 1 1/4 cup regular granulated sugar provides the perfect amount of sweetness!
Flour – You will need 1 1/4 cup all-purpose flour for the base of this brownie recipe. You can use a gluten-free flour substitute if you prefer.
Vanilla extract – We need 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract to help get a good flavor base for these brownies. The higher the quality of the vanilla, the better!
Salt– This is the flavor enhancer and it works to make everything else taste great! You need 3/4 teaspoon of salt to do this.
Baking powder: Use 1/2 teaspoon for the leavening agent in the brownies. Make sure your baking powder isn’t old or expired for maximum results.
White chocolate chips – Adding just 1 cup of white chocolate chips add some amazing texture and flavor to the brownies.
Almonds – You need 1/2 cup of slivered almonds, but you could use chopped almonds instead.
Cream Cheese Frosting Ingredients
Cream cheese – Just 3 ounces of cream cheese provides the base for the frosting. You can use regular cream cheese or a low-fat or non-fat version. Just make sure the cream cheese is softened to room temperature before making the frosting.
Powdered sugar – Using 2/3 cup of powder sugar provides just the right amount of sweetness to the frosting.
How to make Black Forest Brownies
Prep
Start by preheating the oven to 350°.
Then, grease a 9X13 pan with butter or non-stick cooking spray and set aside.
Next, chop up all of the cherries into 4 small pieces and place on paper towels to help absorb the excess moisture while you are mixing up the rest of the batter.
After that, place the chocolate chips and butter in a glass bowl and microwave for 1 minute. Stir and then microwave for 30 seconds more (if needed). Stir until smooth.
Brownie Batter
In a large bowl, combine the melted chocolate mixture, eggs, sugar, flour, vanilla extract, salt and baking powder. Stir with spoon until well combined.
Then, fold in white chocolate chips, 1 cup of the chopped cherries and all the almonds. Stir until just combined.
Proceed to pour and spread the brownie batter into the prepared greased pan.
Bake
Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 35 minutes or until toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean.
Frosting and Serve
Once the brownies have cooled completely, slice into bars.
Just before serving, in a small bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and powdered sugar together.
Then place the mixture into a piping bag or ziplocked bag with the corner snipped off. Pipe a drizzle onto each brownie and sprinkle the remaining chopped cherries on top of each individual brownie.
Serve immediately and enjoy!

Can you freeze black forest brownies?
These brownies can be frozen before adding the frosting and extra cherries, I recommend slicing them into serving sized squares and flash freezing for 2 hours on a baking sheet until solid. Then individually wrap them up in plastic wrap before storing in an airtight container. Then, when you want to eat a sweet chocolaty treat, all you have to do is remove a piece of brownie from the freezer and let it thaw for an hour or so on the counter until soft. Pipe on a little bit of frosting and add some extra cherries! (You can keep the frosting in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.)
How long are homemade brownies good for?
If stored properly in an airtight container, at room temperature, these brownies will last 3-5 days. Keep the cream cheese frosting in the refrigerator until you are ready to use it.
