Apple Hand Pies- What is a Hand Pie?
Apple pie has always been a favorite of mine. I even remember trying to convince my mom that apple pie was a totally acceptable breakfast.
Apples= healthy.. right? Isn’t that how it works? ????
The first time I saw a cute, half circle hand pie was less than a year ago. We had just recently moved and I ran into the cutest little hand pies at the local grocery store.
They have been on my ‘must make ASAP’ list since laying my eyes on them. (In case you are wondering, that list is extremely long. I don’t know that I will ever catch up!)
I love that hand pies need ZERO utensils. I also love that they are covered with vanilla glaze. And cinnamon & sugar. And lots of love.
The absolute, tippy top, very best part of the hand pies though? SERIOUSLY EASY.
Check it out!
How to make Apple Hand Pies
For the apple pie filling, I used canned apple pie filling. Just make sure to cut the apples into small pieces. The small pieces fit into the hand pies a lot nicer than the large slices.
For the pie crust, I used a boxed pie crust mix. Krusteaz is a great brand and tastes like you spent HOURS on it. Win, win.
The crust mix and some cold water are mixed together until a ball forms. (Follow directions on the box)
Roll the dough out on a floured surface until about 1/4 inch thin. I really like a thin, delicate crust.
Use a large, round cookie cutter to cut circles out of the pie crust. I used a 4 inch circle cookie cutter.
Spoon a small amount of the pie filling into each circle.
Carefully, fold each circle in half and pinch the edges. Using a fork, crimp around the edge. Then take a sharp knife and score the top of the hand pie to allow steam to escape.
Repeat with remaining circles. Gather up the pie crust scraps, roll out again and repeat.
Line on a parchment paper covered cookie sheet.
Bake at 350° for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
While the hand pies are baking, mix together the vanilla glaze.
The vanilla glaze consists of butter, powdered sugar, milk and vanilla extract. Mix them using a hand mixer or a stand mixer.
After the pies have cooled for a few minutes, gently dip and flip them in the glaze.
If you toss them in the glaze right after they come out of the oven, the glaze will just slide right off.
Sprinkle the hand pies with a little cinnamon an sugar immediately after they are glazed, if desired.
Cool and let the glaze set before eating!
