Ingredients for Apple Pie Fries

Oil: Add oil to a pan for frying these apple strips in.

Key Tips for Making Apple Pie Fries
Full instructions in the recipe card below, but here are a few tips for making this fun & simple treat!
- Pie crust selection is so important. Pre-made pie crusts are just so dang easy. But they’re not all created equally! Look for crusts labeled “all-butter” or “flaky” for a crisp, tender base.
- Choosing the best applesauce. I love using our homemade chunky applesauce, but use your favorite. I think unsweetened is the best here, to get that tangy apple flavor.
- Using the right oil for frying. Choose a neutral oil with a high smoke point, such as canola, vegetable, or peanut oil. These oils prevent burning and maintain a clean flavor.
How long are these apple pie fries good for?
Apple Pie Fries stay fresh for about 1-2 days at room temperature. For longer storage, place them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Reheat them in a low oven or toaster oven to keep the crust crispy.

Ingredients
Instructions
- Mix the cinnamon and sugar together in a small bowl.
- Take 1 TBSP of the cinnamon sugar mixture and mix with the applesauce.
- Spread the apple sauce onto half of the pie crust leaving ¼-inch rim around the edge without any apple sauce.
- Fold the pie crust over and pinch to seal the edge.
- Use a pizza cutter and cut the pie crust into strips, creating the apple pie fries. For the longer strips, you’ll want to cut those in half.
- Heat ½-inch of oil in a skillet. Once the oil is hot, fry the Apple Pie Fries in batches for 1-2 minutes on each side until golden brown. Remove the Fries from the oil and place on a paper towel lined plate.
- Shake the finished fries in the remaining cinnamon and sugar. Serve warm & enjoy!

Can I use homemade pie crust instead of pre-made?
Yes, homemade pie crust works well and may add a more personalized flavor. Make sure the dough is chilled before frying. The texture might differ slightly, but it will still be delicious.
Is it possible to make these Fries with a different type of filling?
Absolutely. Other fruit fillings like peach, cherry, or berry sauces can be used. Adjust the sugar and spice amounts to balance each fruit’s natural sweetness and tartness.
Are there any dipping sauce that pair well with these fries?
Vanilla glaze, caramel sauce, or whipped cream are popular choices. Plain Greek yogurt mixed with honey also pairs nicely for a lighter option.

Fried Pie Crust

1/2 Cup Crisco
3/4 Cup Buttermilk ( it has to the real thing)
To make the pastry, mix together the flour. Cut in the 1/2 cup of shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add buttermilk, stirring gently until it all comes together. Form into a ball and refrigerate for at least 1 hour in a plastic bag.

Interesting. Legoland has apple fries where they fry slices of Granny Smith apples in a batter and then sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar and dip in whipped cream. They are amazing! I would think these would be somewhat similar.

I tried the apple fries and I had one big mess – all the applesauce came out of the crust once you cut into strips.
Jessica says
It sounds like you added too much applesauce Denise. Did you measure out the 1/3 cup as instructed?

Can these be baked, we do not eat anything that is fried, if they can how long and at what temp.
Jessica says
You can use an air fryer- everyone’s seem to be a little different, but I’d do 3-5 minutes. And yes, you can bake them at 425°F for about 10 minutes. : )
Linda says
What temp setting if using an Air Fryer? You didn’t mention the temperature. Thanks.

I’d put it at 325-350!
