How to Make Dark Chocolate Peppermint Pie
Prepare the crust
In a food processor, finely crush your Oreos. If you do not have a food processor you can crush oreo’s in a bag using a rolling pin.
Add in the melted butter and then process again to combine. Again, if you do not have a food processor add melted butter to bag and use hands to combine.
Press your Oreo butter mixture into the bottom of a 9-inch pie pan and bring it up the sides as well.
Make ganache
In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine the chocolate chips, 3 tablespoons of butter, and milk and then cook in the microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring well between each until smooth.
Pour the chocolate mixture over the prepared crust.
Sprinkle ¼ cup of crushed peppermints on top of the chocolate layer.
Make creamy filling
In another medium-size bowl, use an electric mixer to cream together the cream cheese, sugar, sour cream, and peppermint extract until mixture is smooth.
Fold in the cool whip.
Assemble and chill
Spread the creamy filling mixture on top of the chocolate mixture in the pie pan. For a cleaner look you can also use a piping bag to pipe it on top.
Top the whole pie with some crushed peppermints and dark chocolate shavings for extra yumminess.
Place in the fridge overnight. Do not skip this step as this is what helps the flavors to develop and taste perfect.
Slice, serve and enjoy!

How to store peppermint chocolate pie
Keep this pie stored in the fridge, well covered, or in an airtight container for up to 3 or 4 days. The flavors and textures are best the day after it’s been made.
Can I use storebought crust?
Absolutely! If you want to save a little time and effort go right ahead and buy a premade oreo pie crust instead of making your own.
What do I use if I don’t have a food processor?
The simplest method would be to place ingredients in a large plastic zip locked bag and use a rolling pin to crush the items. If you do not have rolling pin find any large item that you can place over the top of the bag and move around, crushing the ingredient into a fine mixture. You also might try a chopping tool if you have one available.
How to crush peppermint candies
Because you’ll need a nice amount of crushed peppermint for this chocolate peppermint pie recipe I recommend placing a few broken candy canes in a food processor to make the process smooth. You could also place them (unwrapped) in a zipper-locked baggie and then hit the bag a few times with a rolling pin to crush them by hand.
CAN YOU REPLACE THE COOL WHIP?
Cool Whip is the best “whipped topping” to use in this recipe. However, if you can’t find Cool Whip where you live or you prefer not to use it in recipes, you can use stabilized whipped cream instead. If you just use regular whipped cream, the consistency will be too light and the cream will not hold up very well. It’s very simple to make your own stabilized whipped cream and it just takes a few minutes!
HOW DO YOU MAKE STABILIZED WHIPPED CREAM?
If you want to make whipped cream ahead of time, you can, but you have to stabilize it. To make stabilized whipped cream, you will need the following ingredients:
- 4 ounces of cream cheese (softened to room temperature)
- 1/3 cup powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream
Beat the whipping cream just until soft peaks form.
Add in the cream cheese, powdered sugar and vanilla. Whip on high until mixture is smooth.
Store in the refrigerator until ready to use, up to 3 days.
A little tip for making whipped cream faster: use a metal bowl and place the bowl in the freezer for about 30 minutes before you make the whipped cream. This will significantly decrease the amount of time that you will need to beat the whipped cream – the process will go much faster!
