Soft Homemade Breadsticks Ingredients
Water: You will need 1 ¼ cups of warm water that registers between 110-115 degrees F. This is needed to activate the yeast properly without killing it.
Yeast: Use 1 package of active dry yeast to make tour dough rise nicely. This is about 2 ¼ teaspoons of yeast.
Sugar: To feed the yeast and get the dough to turn out properly, use 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar (or honey if you prefer).
Oil: Adding 2 tablespoons of olive oil will hydrate the dough well and keep the breadsticks moist while baking.
Flour: The gluten structural base of the dough is 3 ½-4 cups cups of bread flour.
Salt: Use 2 teaspoons of kosher salt for added flavor enhancement.
Garlic Butter topping
Butter: You need 3 tablespoons of unsalted butter, melted, for the tasty topping.
Garlic powder: Use ½ teaspoon of garlic powder for great added flavor.

How to make Homemade Breadsticks
Proof yeast
Start by adding the warm water, yeast, and sugar to the bowl of a stand mixer, give it a quick stir and then let it sit for 10 minutes until frothy.
Make dough
Next add in the olive oil, bread flour, and salt, using the paddle attachment, mix until combined.
Knead dough
Swap out the stand mixer attachment for the dough hook and proceed to knead on medium speed until the dough is smooth and elastic. Add in more flour, a little at a time as needed, to make the dough stop being sticky.
Let rise
After that, place a piece of plastic wrap over the top of the bowl and allow the dough to rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
Once the dough has risen, punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal sized pieces that weigh approximately 200 grams each.
Proceed to roll each piece into 9 inch long sticks, place side by side on a baking sheet, cover and allow to rise again for another 30 minutes.
Bake
Get the oven preheating to 400 degrees F.
After the 30 minutes is up, remove the plastic wrap, and place the breadsticks in the preheated oven and bake the for 12 minutes. While the breadsticks are baking, make the butter topping.
Make topping
In a small bowl, microwave the butter to melt it completely, then add the garlic powder and salt, stir to combine.
Once the breadsticks are done baking and have cooled for about 5 minutes, proceed to brush the seasoned butter over the top of each breadstick.
Serve them warm and enjoy!
Helpful Baker’s Tips
Just a few tips to help the bread making process successful for you!
- For the best results, you will want to make sure that you allow the breadsticks time to rise until doubled before being shaped. After shaping, allowing them to rest some more will give you a fluffier, softer result because the gluten has had more time to relax after being handled.
- Make sure that your breadsticks are long! (like 9 inches) for a standard breadstick appearance. Shorter sticks are okay, but note that they will look more like small rolls after being baked.
- If you choose to use an instant or rapid rise yeast, you will not need to proof the dough, just add the yeast when you add the flour. This shortens the recipe time slightly.

How do you store homemade breadsticks?
After your bread has completely cooled, wrap it well in plastic wrap and store it in an airtight container until ready to eat. Store them in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
Can I freeze these buttered breadsticks?
Yes, breadsticks are great for the freezer! Simply let the bread cool completely and then wrap it well in plastic wrap or a bread bag before storing it in an airtight container and moving to the freezer for 3 months or less. Then let it thaw on the counter for a few hours before serving and you are good to go!
How can I tell if yeast has gone bad?
If you want to know whether or not your yeast is bad then you are in luck because it is not too hard to figure out. When you let your yeast sit in the warm liquid for a few minutes during the beginning of the recipe, you know right away if it is good or not because it will bubble up and look foamy. Simply watch its reaction. If the mix does not bubble or hardly bubbles at all within 10 minutes, toss it out and buy new yeast and try again. As long as your warm liquid wasn’t too hot (not above 110F degrees and wasn’t too cold) there should have been a reaction.
