Tips for Making Root Beer Poke Cake
Full instructions are in the recipe card below, here are just a few tips for a successful baking experience!
- Once the cake is fully baked, it’s important to let it cool completely. Cooling prevents the cake from crumbling when you poke the holes.
- For the topping, mix the Dream Whip powder with cold Root Beer. Using an electric mixer ensures the whipped topping is smooth and light.
- Want more Root Beer flavor? Add 1 tsp Root Beer extract to the cake and ½ tsp extract to the whipped cream frosting. Taste the topping and add more if you’d like.

How long is this poke cake good for & how do you store it?
Root Beer poke cake lasts about 3 to 4 days when refrigerated in an airtight container. It’s best to keep it chilled and covered to prevent it from drying out.
You can freeze this cake for longer storage, but there are a few things to keep in mind. You can freeze the cake portion, do not add the condensed milk and whipped topping. Freezing a frosted poke cake isn’t ideal as the toppings will change the texture. Because this cake is so simple to make, freezing is generally not recommended.
