This wonderful holiday appetizer only calls for a few basic ingredients and minimal prep work to make too. It is so much easier to make than you may think, don’t like the amusing appearance fool you. Thanks to the shredded cheese, meats, seasonings, and crushed walnuts, it is also bursting with flavor in every bite.
WHY WE THINK YOU WILL LOVE THIS CHEESE BALL RECIPE!
I didn’t grow up with the traditional holiday cheese ball at parties, but upon trying one, I was immediately sold. Here are three reasons we think you will enjoy this recipe too:
- It’s customizable. The great thing about this cheese appetizer is you can modify to suit your own family’s taste. If you want to use a different shredded cheese, go for it. Want to swap out the walnuts for pecans, feel free! There are two types of meats called for in the recipe, if you want to use only one, do it! It’s just one of the many reasons I love this recipe.
- Prep it in advance. The great thing about this recipe is that you can make this festive cheese ball a day or so in advance and keep it in the fridge. It will be ready to pull out and entertain guests at a moment’s notice.
- No actual cooking required. This recipe is as easy as blending together some ingredients and shaping them into a triangle. There are no ovens, stovetops, or even microwaves needed. It couldn’t get any easier than this.
Reindeer Cheese Ball Ingredients
Cream cheese: The base of the cheese ball is two 8-ounce packages of cream cheese.
Shredded cheese: Add in 1 cup of shredded Colby jack cheese for an extra flavorful and cheesy ball of goodness.
Green onion: Using ¾ cups of chopped green onion really helps to make this recipe delicious and adds a nice but of color to the dip too.
Meats: You will need ½ cup of each pepperoni and salami, both diced into small pieces that will be mixed into the cheese mixture.
Seasoning: Use 1 teaspoon of Italian seasoning to help flavor the cheese ball well.
Walnuts: You will need about 1/2 cup of crushed walnuts to press onto the outside of this cheeseball after shaping.
Garnishes: You will need 1 cherry tomato (for the nose) 2 pretzel sticks (for the antlers) and 2 chocolate chips (for the eyes) (raisins can also be used instead of chocolate).
Crackers: Serve your favorite mix of crackers with this cheeseball.
How to make Reindeer Christmas Cheese Ball
Prep
Start by chopping the green onion into small pieces. Then, dice the pepperoni and salami into small chunks as well.
Assemble dip
In a large mixing bowl, combine the cream cheese, shredded cheese, green onions, pepperoni, salami, and Italian seasonings. Mix the ingredients together well using a fork or even an electric mixer, you want the cream cheese to be pliable and all the ingredients well combined.
Next, place the cheese mixture onto a serving plate and mold it into a triangle. I typically do this with clean hands, you can also wear simple plastic gloves if you want to keep the cheese off your hands.
Proceed to cover the entire surface of the cheese dip with the chopped walnuts. I find it easiest to stick the walnuts to the cheese in small handfuls, press them on gently but firm enough they stick into the cheese.
After that, add the pretzel rod for antlers, the chocolate chips for the eyes, and the cherry tomato for the nose. Use a toothpick to hold the tomato in place if needed.
Serve with crackers and enjoy!

WHAT DO I SERVE WITH CHEESEBALLS?
You can serve so many different things with cheeseballs, but my favorite is crackers. I like all different kinds of crackers, but I find that the smaller the cracker, the better they look on serving trays. Square crackers like Triscuits or Wheat Thins are currently my favorite for entertaining.
How long are homemade cheeseballs good for?
A homemade cheese ball, if kept well covered in an airtight container in the fridge, can last up to 2 weeks. Giving you plenty of time to enjoy leftovers or a chance to make it in advance of a big party and not rushing to throw it together at the last minute.
Can I freeze a reindeer cheese ball?
Yes, you can freeze the cheese ball but make sure to take precautions first. For example, the garnished antlers, eyes, and nose should not be placed in the freezer. Wrap your triangle of walnut-covered cheese and store it in the freezer for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge and then add your garnishes before serving.
