If you’re looking for Halloween cupcake ideas or how to make owl cupcakes for baby showers, then this is the right recipe for you. With just a few simple and basic ingredients, you too can have easy owl cakes that everyone can enjoy.
What are Oreo Owl Cupcakes?
Oreo owl cupcakes are simple and easy to make cupcakes that look almost too adorable to eat. With a base of chocolate cupcakes frosted with chocolate ganache frosting decorated with halved Oreos, M&Ms, and candy corn, we can create a cupcake that looks like a big eyed owl is staring back at us.
Oreo Owl Cupcake Ingredients
-Chocolate Cupcake: These can be premade from scratch or by box according to the package instructions.
-Chocolate Frosting: A chocolate ganache frosting made with 1 ¼ cups of chocolate chips and 1 cup of heavy cream is a perfect DIY frosting, but you can use storebought too.
-Oreo Cookies: Using regular or Double Stuf Oreos, or even Golden Oreos, we can get incredible round eyes for our owls.
-M&Ms: These are going to be the eyeballs, so using regular M&Ms is recommended so that the pupils aren’t too large. Choose colors of choice (we like brown) and enjoy.
-Candy Corn: These triangle shaped candies are perfect for owl noses are abundant in stores in Fall, making them the perfect addition to our Halloween cupcakes.
How to Make Oreo Owl Cupcakes
Make your cupcakes and let them cool completely.
In a small saucepan over medium-high heat, heat your cream until almost boiling.
Reduce the heat to medium-low and add in the chocolate chips. Allow the chips to heat in the cream for about 1 minute before stirring gently, until melted, and then remove from heat and let the mixture cool slightly.
Separate your Oreo cookies in half and lay them out on a countertop. You only need the side with the filling on it, so reserve the blank halves for a chocolate cookie pie crust or enjoy them as a snack.
Place an M&M on each cookie, in the round filling. Press them in gently, so that they can stick in place.
Frost the cupcakes with the ganache, leaving a “tuft” of hair on the top/middle of the cupcake. This will look like feathers.
Gently press the Oreo cookies onto the frosting, close together, and then add the candy corn triangle (pointy side down) between/below the two cookies. That’s it!
OREO OWL CUPCAKES
Ingredients
- chocolate cupcakes {make according to package instructions}
- chocolate frosting {we used a ganache- recipe below}
- Oreo cookies
- M&M’s
- Candy Corn
- 1 1/4 cup chocolate chips
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream
Instructions
- Heat the cream in a small saucepan over medium-high heat.
- Once it’s about to boil, turn the heat down to medium-low and add in the chocolate chips.
- Allow chips to heat for about a minute, then begin stirring gently, until chips are melted and mixture is smooth.
- Allow to cool slightly before frosting cupcakes. If ganache hardens before you’re ready, simply return to low heat and stir again.
- Separate the two halves of the Oreo cookies and lay out on a counter top.
- Place a brown M&M on each cookie, pressing in gently so they stick.
- Frost the cupcakes, leaving a pointy “tuft” of frosting on the top, middle of the cupcake for the owl’s feathers.
- Gently press 2 Oreo halves onto the top of the cupcake.
- Add in a candy corn, pointy end facing down as the beak.

What can I use in place of Candy Corn?
If you can’t find any candy corn in stock or it simply isn’t in season yet, then there are still plenty of other ways you can make your Oreo owls! Using a yellow M&M, turned sideways, you can create a tiny beak. Jelly beans, candy coated sunflower seeds, or even large sprinkles can all work in a pinch too!
Can I make owl cupcakes with oreo eyes in advance?
Yes, these cupcakes can be made the day before (or even two days) in advance of a party. Simply make sure to keep them stored well so that the eyes don’t break or become too stale.
How to store Owl cupcakes
Keep your cupcakes stored in an airtight container or on a plate covered in plastic wrap. Due to the eyes being large, you may fit fewer cupcakes on trays than you’re used to, but it’s totally worth it to keep these little guys intact.
