Ingredients in Layered Oreo Pudding Dessert
- Oreo cookies – Use a 16 oz. package of regular Oreos. There are 45 Oreos in a 16-ounce package, which is helpful to know if you have a different-sized package.
- Butter – Make sure the butter is melted before adding it to the recipe. I like to melt butter in the microwave because it is so fast, but you can do it over the stove in a saucepan if you prefer!
- Cream cheese – The cream cheese needs to be softened to room temperature before adding to the other ingredients.
- Powdered sugar – Sweetens and thickens the cream cheese layer.
- Instant pudding – You will need a small package of vanilla pudding and a small package of chocolate pudding. Make sure to use instant pudding for this recipe!
- Cool Whip – Use a big one (16 oz) and make sure it is thawed to room temperature as well.
- Chocolate syrup – You will need 8 ounces of chocolate syrup – feel free to use whatever kind is your favorite! You can use more of a fudge topping if you prefer, but you may need to microwave it for a little bit in order to make it runny enough to drizzle! Sometimes I like to add a little bit of caramel topping as well!
- Milk – You will need milk to make the pudding layers, and you can use pretty much any type of milk. Skim, 1% and 2% all work well, but you can also use a dairy-free alternative if needed.

Helpful Tips for Making Layered Oreo Pudding Dessert
Full instructions on how to make the recipe can be found on the recipe card below, but here are a few helpful tips.
- Crush cookies by hand for texture: While a food processor works, I recommend the zip-top bag and rolling pin method. Bigger chunks of Oreo give the crust more bite and make the dessert look prettier when sliced.
- Don’t skip cooling the crust: Letting the Oreo-butter base cool completely prevents the cream cheese layer from melting and sliding around.
- Use softened cream cheese: Room-temperature cream cheese blends smoothly and keeps the filling light and fluffy. Cold cream cheese will leave lumps.
- Instant pudding is non-negotiable: Cook-and-serve pudding won’t set properly in this recipe. Stick to instant pudding for the best results.
- Chill for best flavor: While it sets after a couple of hours, this dessert really shines when chilled overnight—the layers meld together, and the flavors intensify.
- Make it your own: Swap in caramel drizzle, use flavored Oreos (mint or golden are fun), or even layer with all chocolate pudding if that’s your preference.

Storage Instructions
- Refrigerator: Keep covered in the fridge for up to 4 days.
- Freezer: Freeze in an airtight container for up to 1 month. Thaw overnight in the fridge before serving.
- Make ahead: Perfect for preparing the night before, since the flavors meld beautifully as it chills.

FAQs
How do you soften cream cheese quickly?
Cut into smaller chunks and let sit at room temperature for 15–20 minutes, or microwave for 10–15 seconds at a time until soft.
Can I substitute Cool Whip?
Yes! Stabilized whipped cream works perfectly, while regular whipped cream won’t hold up well in the layers.
How do I make stabilized whipped cream?
Blend cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla until smooth. Whip heavy cream to soft peaks, then fold the mixtures together until stiff peaks form.
Can I make this dessert ahead of time?
Yes, it’s even better when chilled overnight! The crust softens slightly, and the layers meld for the perfect bite.
Can I change the pudding flavors?
Absolutely—try all chocolate, all vanilla, or even cookies-and-cream pudding for fun variations.
What’s the best way to crush Oreos for this recipe?
A zip-top bag and rolling pin works great for chunkier pieces, while a food processor gives a finer crumb if you prefer a smoother crust.

This recipe sounds great! Could you please clarify about the pudding? When you mix the pudding powder with the milk, do you refrigerate it before you spread it on top? Do you layer them separately?
Nellie says
No need to refrigerate first – you can just spread the pudding on top as soon as it is mixed up!

Haven’t tried this recipe yet, however one of my favorite desserts is “Oreo mouse”. I got the recipe from a cook at a restaurant my sister and I used to go to every Sunday for brunch buffet. And when we found out they were closing I knew I had to get the recipe haha. It’s kind of similar but only 4 ingredients, it’s just a tub of cool whip, a big box of instant chocolate pudding, half a bag of mini marshmallows and about 15-20 crushed Oreos. Just make the pudding accordingly to box directions and let it set up. Then mix in all the rest of the ingredients and let it set up in fridge for at least 5-6 hours. I usually just make it the night before. Simple and delicious. I’m definitely going to have to try this version though sounds great. Thanks for sharing.
Julie says
Are you mixing both pudding mixes together or dividing the milk and mixing separately?
Nellie says
Yep, just mix both puddings together with the milk. Enjoy!

This is a dessert request for every family gathering. Vary ingredients sometimes: flour/butter crust, marshmallows in cream cheese layer, chocolate chips…
Alison says
I love when they turn into regular requests! Thanks for sharing Brenda!
Kimberly Copeland says
I baked the crust for 20 minutes and it had a burnt taste.
I have an oven thermometer and it was 350 degrees.
Most recipes I see say 10 min for a 9×13 Oreo crust.
Thoughts?
Nellie says
I’ve always made this by baking for 20 minutes and haven’t ever had it taste burnt, but I’m sure it would be fine to reduce the cooking time by a few minutes if that’s what you are experiencing!
