Halloween Sprinkle Cookies are a festive & sweet way to celebrate Halloween! Soft, easy Halloween cookie recipe covered in orange and black sprinkles then baked to cookie perfection.
Halloween Cookie Decorating
I know I am not the only one who likes to make desserts that coincide with holidays. Halloween is no different. Whether this means rolling and cutting sugar cookies and carefully decorating with royal icing or simply making spooky chocolate covered pretzels, we are cut from the same cloth and can officially be friends.
For me personally, the majority of the time simplicity wins. Can I tell you how simple Sprinkle Cookies are? Sprinkles are my favorite way to decorate any cookie. The cookie immediately looks the part with no additional work! I call that a win!
Where is the best place to buy sprinkles?
I always buy sprinkles from my local grocery store’s bakery! I highly suggest looking into this. Not only do they always have great holiday mixes but are usually about half the price you would expect! When I purchased these black and orange sprinkles I paid $2.15 for 1 1/2 cups of sprinkles!
You can also find festive sprinkles on the baking aisle, or near the holiday section of your grocery store. Craft stores like Michael’s & Joann’s also have a great selection of holiday sprinkles!
How to make Halloween Sugar Cookies
To make the Sprinkle Cookies we will start with the cookie dough. Cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. You can do this with either a stand mixer or electric hand mixer. I tend to use my stand mixer but the choice is yours.
Make the Sugar Cookie Dough
After the butter and sugar is combined, add in the eggs and vanilla extract. This cookie has a great vanilla flavor you are going to love!
The last ingredients to go into the bowl are flour, baking powder and salt. Combine until the dough forms. The dough will be soft, you should be able to scoop and roll easily without the dough sticking to your hands, though.
Roll in sprinkles
Scoop, roll and then shake those sprinkles on! I just place the ball of dough in a bowl alongside the sprinkles and shake it until the cookie dough is covered with sprinkles.
Bake the Sprinkle Cookies
Bake at 350° for 9-10 minutes. To make sure that the cookies stay soft it is important to pull them out of the oven before they start turning brown on the edges. Just watch the tops of the cookies, pull them out when the tops are no longer glossy.
Allow the cookies to cool on the pan for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire cooling rack.
Halloween Cookies with Sprinkles
Ingredients
- 1 cup butter room temperature
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 eggs
- 3 tsp vanilla
- 2 1/4 cups all purpose flour
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 cup orange and black sprinkles
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°.
- Either using a stand mixer or a handmixer, cream together the butter and sugar. Cream for about two minutes or until light and fluffy. Scrape down the sides of the bowl.
- Add in the eggs and vanilla and mix until well combined.
- Add in the flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix until fully incorporated. The dough will be sticky.
- Pour your sprinkles into a bowl. Scoop the cookie dough out of the mixing bowl and place in the sprinkles .Roll the dough around in the sprinkles until it is fully covered. Reshaped the dough into a ball before placing on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet.
- The cookies will spread quite a bit while baking, so I suggest limiting each cookie sheet to about eight cookies.
- Bake at 350° for 10 minutes. Cool completely on the pan. The cookies will stay fresh in an airtight container for 2 to 3 days.

THanks for sharing! Do you use this dough base in any other recipes?

Thank you!
My 3.5 year old and his 18m brother just “made” these, they had fun, not too much of a mess, and they’re perfectly soft! It will probably be my new go to recipe for the holidays, and I’ll just switch the sprinkles colors.
Alison says
I’m so glad your kiddos loved these! It’s so fun when the kids can easily help!
Jamie says
Do you use salted or unsalted butter?
Nellie says
I always use salted butter, but either works!
Ashley says
Could you make this cookie dough a few days ahead and store in the fridge then bake?
Nellie says
Absolutely. If it’s going to be more than 2-3 days though, I would probably shape the cookies and freeze them to bake later.
Stephanie Draper says
Hi I followed this recipe and my cookies were like pancakes. Maybe because it’s a hot day here in CA? The dough was so tasty but the cookies didn’t look so appealing. Any suggestion? Thanks!
Nicole says
If your dough falls flat when baking it is most likely due to warm butter. Next time chill the dough for a good hour or so before shaping and baking. This can really help to get the cookies to hold their shape better. If you’re in a hurry you may be able to shape the dough and then freeze on a baking sheet for 30 minutes.
Allison says
I made these cookies and did not have good results. The first batch came out extremely flat. On the second batch I used different sprinkles and turned down the oven temp and the were still flat. The taste of the dough was good but the cookies were not appealing and completely broke apart.
Jessica says
Sounds like something didn’t go quite right Allison!
