What is blueberry jam?
This blueberry jam recipe is essential fresh blueberries and sugar that’s cooked until the berries are softened and cooked down to a spreadable consistency. No pectin or lemon juice necessary!
Easy blueberry jam ingredients
-Fresh blueberries: Using sweet, fresh blueberries is a great idea, but a bag of frozen blueberries can be used as well. If your berries aren’t very sweet, feel free to add another 1/4 cup of sugar if you’d like. The natural pectin in the berries comes from sweet, ripe fruit and it helps the jam to thicken and set better.
-Sugar: With only ½ a cup of sugar in this jam, it allows the fresh fruit flavor to shine through!
-Water: You need only a tablespoon of water, which is mostly used to help dissolve the sugar and cook the berries a little more evenly since it’d added in the first step when you toss everything in.
How to make easy blueberry jam
Add your blueberries, water, and sugar to a small saucepan over medium heat and stir to combine.
Bring the pot to a boil and then reduce the heat to medium-low. Let simmer for 30-35 minutes until thickened.
Once the mixture begins to thicken, stir constantly. You’ll know that the jam is finished cooking when it’s thick enough that when you stir, you can see the bottom of the pan.
Let the jam cool and then pour it into an airtight container or jar & store in the fridge for up to 7-10 days. Jam can also be frozen in an airtight container for up to 2 months.

What is pectin?
Pectin is a starch used in canning to help thicken jams and jellies. It’s naturally occurring and can be found in many fruits including blueberries. You can make jam without pectin (it’s likely the way your grandmothers and great-grandmothers made it!) See our recipe for Easy No-Pectin Strawberry Jam here!
Why is my jam not thickening up?
Your jam should thicken up as its heated due to the water evaporating and the mixture thickening naturally. If you find that it’s not as thick as you would like it to be, add 2-3 TBSP more sugar.
How long does Jam take to set without pectin?
Reducing the fruit mixture into a jam-like thickness can take about 20-30 minutes, possibly a little longer depending on the size and juiciness of the blueberries. This is a simple recipe but it does require a little bit of patience. But trust me, it’s well worth it!
Can I use frozen blueberries for jam?
Yes, you can use frozen instead of fresh if that’s what you have on hand. The frozen berries may take a little longer to reduce though as they have more liquid as a result of the ice that formed while freezing.

I make this to mix with fresh blueberries as a blue berry pie filling to prevent that ugly blue liquid upon slicing.

What a great idea Beth!

I absolutely love fresh blueberry jam and it was exactly how I remembered making it when I used to go picking blueberries at the groves. This year there weren’t any open to grab my favorite berries so I tried it with frozen ones. Thank you, thank you for suggesting it and it does work as well as fresh. Tomorrow I’m looking forward to one delicious breakfast!
