Valentine’s Day Sugar Cookies are soft, thick, and hands-down one of the best sugar cookie recipes you’ll ever make. These cream cheese sugar cookies are perfectly sweet, stay moist for days, and hold their shape beautifully when baked — making them ideal for cut-out cookies and decorating.

Recipe Highlights
- Soft but sturdy: These cookies stay thick and tender while still being strong enough to decorate without breaking.
- A tried-and-true favorite: I’ve tested a lot of sugar cookie recipes over the years, and this one completely replaced the rest. It’s reliable, consistent, and turns out great every single time.
- Perfect for baking with kids: My kids love making these for holidays, especially Valentine’s Day. The dough is easy to handle and forgiving, which makes it great for little helpers.
- Roll-and-cut or keep it simple: You can roll the dough out and cut fun shapes, or scoop, roll, and flatten the dough for classic round cookies — both methods work beautifully.

INGREDIENTS IN VALENTINE’S DAY SUGAR COOKIES
Cookies
- Butter: Softened butter creates structure and richness; salted or unsalted both work.
- Sugar: Sweetens the dough and helps create a tender texture.
- Cream cheese: Softened cream cheese keeps the cookies soft and flavorful.
- Egg: Binds the dough together so the cookies bake evenly.
- Vanilla & almond extract: Vanilla adds warmth, while almond gives a classic bakery-style flavor (optional).
- All-purpose flour: Provides structure while keeping the cookies tender.
- Baking powder: Gives the cookies just enough lift without spreading.
Frosting
- Food coloring & sprinkles: Optional, but perfect for festive Valentine’s cookies.
- Powdered sugar: Creates a smooth, thick frosting perfect for spreading.
- Butter: Adds richness and structure to the frosting.
- Almond or vanilla extract: Adds flavor that complements the cookies beautifully.
- Milk: Adjusts the frosting to your desired consistency.

Tips for Perfect Sugar Cookies
Full instructions can be found on the recipe card below, but here are a few helpful tips.
- Chill before rolling: Cold dough is easier to handle and prevents spreading.
- Don’t add extra flour: Sticky dough before chilling is normal — adding more flour can dry out the cookies.
- Use softened butter, not melted: Melted butter will ruin the texture.
- Roll evenly: Aim for ¼-inch thickness for soft, sturdy cookies.
- Don’t overbake: If the bottoms are lightly golden, they’re done — even if the tops look pale.

Storage Instructions
Store unfrosted or frosted cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week, or freeze for longer storage.

Ingredients
- 1 ½ cups sugar
- 1 cup butter softened to room temp
- 8 oz cream cheese softened to room temp
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- ½ tsp almond extract
- 3 ½ cups flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
FROSTING
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- ½ cup butter sot
- 1 tsp almond extract
- 2-4 Tbsp milk (to desired consistency)
- food coloring optional
Instructions
- Mix sugar, butter, cream cheese together for about 2-3 minutes.
- Add egg, vanilla and almond extract and mix for another 1-2 minutes. Add the flour and baking powder and mix just until mixed in and smooth.
- Chill for at least 2 hours. Roll out on floured surface to about 1/4” thick and cut out with cookie cutters. (If you prefer to just make circle cookies, you can scoop out tablespoons of dough and roll into a ball. Place on the cookie sheet and use the bottom of a measuring cup or glass to flatten the ball to a 1/4" thickness.)
- Bake at 375° for 8-10 minutes…just until barely turning golden on edges. Cool on cookie sheets for about 5-10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
- To make the frosting, mix all of the frosting ingredients together with a mixer until smooth. Spread onto completely cooled cookies.
