Pumpkin Milkshakes made with real pumpkin and vanilla ice cream! Perfect fall treat that is ready in less than 5 minutes!
I know it’s fall and the weather is cooling down, so it may seem a little strange to be craving a frozen treat this time of year. But these Pumpkin Milkshakes are amazing. Taste a bit like pumpkin pie with ice cream…all in one delicious milkshake. We absolutely love making these for dessert because they are so easy to make. You just can’t beat having a delicious dessert that is instantly ready with only a few minutes of prep time!
Ingredients in Pumpkin Milkshakes
Pumpkin – You’ll need a big can (29 oz) of pumpkin for this recipe. That’s a lot of pumpkin flavor!
Vanilla ice cream – You need 1 pint of vanilla ice cream. That’s 2 cups. And the recipe makes 4 pretty decent sized milkshakes since you add so much milk and pumpkin. Make sure to let the ice cream sit out for 10-15 minutes before using and it will be a lot easier to blend.
Milk – Any variety of milk will work. We usually use 1% because that’s what we have on hand, but you can use skim milk, whole milk, almond milk, rice milk…whatever you’d like!
Pumpkin pie spice – A delicious blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and cloves that should be easily found in any grocery store.
Whipped cream – Milkshakes are always better with whipped cream on top, right?! Totally optional, but I love the way it looks and tastes! I always have a can in the fridge so I can squirt a little dollop on top of desserts without any prep time, but you can definitely whip up some whipping cream with a little bit of sweetener if you prefer!
Nutmeg – Just a little sprinkle on top of the whipped cream is completely optional as well, but it’s pretty and adds a little bit more flavor as well.
How to make Pumpkin Milkshakes

BEST BLENDER FOR MILKSHAKES?
I’ve used a lot of blenders over the years and they have all had some pros and cons. I currently have a Vitamix and I really do think that it is my favorite blender ever. But I have used a Blendtec and a Ninja in the past and both of them did really well with milkshakes too. The Ninja is definitely cheaper than the other options and I love all of the attachments and options that come with it.
For so many years, I used really cheap blenders and sometimes they worked ok, but they never lasted very long. Any time you try to make a large batch or something that is really thick or really frozen tends to overwork the cheap blenders and the motors give out.

How to make Pumpkin Pie Spice
This time of year it is really easy to find Pumpkin Pie Spice in most stores, but if you don’t have any on hand, it’s really simple to make your own! It is basically just a mixture of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and ground cloves. To make the correct amount for this recipe, you will need: 1 tsp cinnamon, 1/4 tsp nutmeg, 1/4 tsp ground ginger, and 1/8 tsp ground cloves. Mix it all together and add it to your milkshakes in place of the pumpkin pie spice that is called for.
DO I HAVE TO USE VANILLA ICE CREAM TO MAKE A MILKSHAKE?
Vanilla ice cream really allows the pumpkin flavor to pop, but if you are feeling crazy, you could probably find some fun ice cream flavor that would be delicious. Maybe chocolate ice cream? Or something with cinnamon in it would be amazing as well. Cookies and cream might be good. Cookie dough with pumpkin…actually sounds really delicious! Or even a pumpkin ice cream would just make the pumpkin flavor even stronger. So many possibilities!
How to make Pumpkin Milkshakes healthier
There is a lot of pumpkin in these milkshakes, so you don’t have to feel too guilty about this dessert since it’s full of vegetables, right?! So the pumpkin may not automatically make these milkshakes “healthy”, but it really isn’t too hard to make them a little more guilt-free without sacrificing much on taste.
If you swap in a low-fat frozen yogurt for the ice cream and you use skim milk, you can save a lot of calories without even noticing a difference in flavor. And at that point, it really is a pretty healthy treat!
