Starbucks Pumpkin Scones made with butter, sugar, flour, pumpkin puree & a blend of warm Fall spices. Tender, soft scones topped with a light vanilla glaze & buttery pumpkin drizzle, just like Starbucks!

I have a confession to make: I don’t like scones that aren’t made at home. Seriously! They’re hard, dry and often flavorless. That’s why I started making them myself. Skip the drive-thru and make a delightful batch of these homemade scones at home!
Ingredients for Pumpkin Scones
Flour: You need 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour (280g) for the scone structure.
Baking powder: 1 TBSP baking powder helps your scones rise and become tender.
Spices: Use 1 tsp ground cinnamon, ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg, ½ teaspoon ground ginger, and ¼ teaspoon ground cloves to bring warmth and complexity to the recipe.
Sugar: Adding ⅓ cup granulated sugar (70g) sweetens and balances the spices without overpowering the pumpkin.
Butter: ½ cup butter, very cold, cut into cubes (113g) creates pockets of flakiness when incorporated into the dry mix.
Pumpkin: For moisture and a rich autumn flavor, add ½ cup pumpkin purée (130g) to the mixture.
Milk: Help bind ingredients with 3 TBSP milk (50g).
Egg: Add 1 egg to the batter to improve the texture.
Extract: Enrich the taste using 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.
Sugar Glaze: Combining 1 ½ cup powdered sugar, sifted (125g), 2 TBSP heavy cream, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract creates a smooth, sweet topping.
Pumpkin Drizzle: Mix together 3 TBSP powdered sugar, 1 TBSP pumpkin purée, 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice, and 1–2 TBSP milk for a sweet, spiced finish.

Notes for making Homemade Scones
- For a flakier texture, chill the dough for 15 minutes before baking.
- You can use plant-based milk and cream to make it dairy-free.
- Add chopped pecans or white chocolate chips to the dough for a twist.
- Make mini scones by dividing the dough into two smaller disks and cutting each into 6 wedges (12 total). Bake for 10–12 minutes.
- Sprinkle chopped candied ginger on top for added zing.
How do I store Iced Pumpkin Spice Scones?
Store in an airtight container at room temperature for 2 days or refrigerate up to 5 days. Reheat briefly for best texture.

Can I freeze them?
Yes! Freeze unglazed scones after baking. Glaze after thawing and reheating.

Starbucks Pumpkin Scones Recipe
Ingredients
- 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour 280g
- 1 TBSP baking powder
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
- ½ tsp ground ginger
- ¼ tsp ground cloves
- ⅓ cup granulated sugar 70g
- ½ cup butter very cold, cut into cubes (113g)
- ½ cup pumpkin purée 130g
- 1 egg
- 3 TBSP milk 50g
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
For the Vanilla Glaze
- 1 ½ cup powdered sugar sifted (125g)
- 2 TBSP heavy cream
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
For the Pumpkin Drizzle
- 3 TBSP powdered sugar
- 1 TBSP pumpkin purée
- 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice
- 1 TBSP milk
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves. Whisk to combine.
- Add the cold cubed butter to the dry mix. Use a fork (or pastry cutter) to incorporate the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse sand with some pea-sized pieces remaining.
- In a separate bowl, whisk the pumpkin puree, egg, milk, vanilla extract, and sugar.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry mixture. Use a spatula or wooden spoon to gently bring the dough together. If the dough feels too sticky, sprinkle in a bit more flour, one tablespoon at a time, until manageable.
- Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Pat it into a 6-7 inch circle. Use a pizza cutter or sharp knife to cut circle into 8 wedges. Transfer scones to the prepared baking sheet, spacing them slightly apart.
- Bake for 15–18 minutes, or until the tops look set and edges are lightly golden. Cool completely before glazing.
- Vanilla Glaze: Whisk the powdered sugar, cream, and vanilla extract until smooth. Spoon or brush the mixture over the cooled scones to coat the surface.
- Pumpkin Drizzle: In another bowl, whisk all the ingredients for the pumpkin drizzle. Start with 1 tablespoon milk and add more as needed for a thick, drizzly consistency. Drizzle the scones with the pumpkin glaze once the base has set. Serve & enjoy!

Can I use canned pumpkin pie filling instead of puree?
Not recommended — it’s already sweetened and spiced and will throw off the flavor balance.
Can you substitute any ingredients for a healthier version?
You can use whole wheat flour instead of all-purpose flour to increase fiber.
Replacing some sugar with natural sweeteners like maple syrup or honey is possible but may alter moisture content.
Using Greek yogurt or applesauce in place of butter reduces fat but changes texture, making scones less flaky.

How can you ensure the butter is properly incorporated?
Use very cold butter straight from the fridge and cut it into small cubes.
Work quickly with a pastry cutter or fork to combine butter and flour until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs with pea-sized pieces.
Avoid overmixing; some larger butter bits help create tender, flaky layers.
What are some flavor variations of this pumpkin scone recipe?
Add dried cranberries or chopped nuts like pecans for texture and flavor contrast.
Incorporate orange zest or a splash of maple syrup into the dough for extra depth.
Swap pumpkin pie spice for chai spices or use chocolate chips to create a different seasonal twist.
