What is Slow Cooker Lava Cake?
A lava cake is a delightful and delicious cake with a molten liquid filling. This type of cake became popular in the late 1990’s, they are surprisingly easy to make in under an hour so it is no surprise they have been a fixture on restaurant menus ever since. Luckily for us, the cake is not as hot as actual lava, but it is always fun to watch the warm ooey-gooey chocolate ooze out of the cake as you slice into it. This lava cake recipe is a combo of a soufflé and a classic chocolate cake, really it is the best of both treats. The added pudding to the recipe creates a lovely creamy texture and the cakes is richer and so much tastier because of it.
Crock pot chocolate lava cake Ingredients
-Cake mix: You will need 1 box of chocolate cake mix (15.25 ounce). I personally am a big fan of Betty Crocker mixes, any of the super moist options would work great for this recipe.
-Eggs: Using 2 large eggs will get the cake to taste even richer thanks to the egg yolks.
-Water: You will need 1 ½ cups of water to give the cake mix the moisture needed for a perfect end result.
-Oil: Adding in ⅓ cup of oil to the cake will provide the much needed fats for the cake to stay nice and moist.
-Pudding mix: The filling needs a 4.2 ounce box of Cookies and Cream instant pudding mix. If you cannot find this specific pudding mix you can go with an alternate flavor, vanilla would be a nice balance to this cake. You can even crush some oreo cookies into the vanilla pudding for the full affect.
-Milk: You will need 2 cups of milk to get the instant pudding to the right consistency.
-Chocolate chips: Use 1 cup of chocolate chips for added flavor and richness to the cake.
Step by step on how to make Cookies and Cream Crockpot Lava Cake
Begin my spraying the inside of your slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray or grease it well with olive oil.
In a large mixing bowl combine the cake mix with the eggs and water, as directed by the cake mix box.
Next, pour the chocolate cake mix into the slow cooker.
In a separate bowl begin to prepare the cookies and cream pudding mix with milk and stir to combine.
Let the pudding sit for 2-3 minutes to set and firm up to a semisolid consistency. You can put this in the refrigerator to set quicker.
Now it is time to add scoops of the pudding to the top of the cake mix. Drop dollops around the cake mixture to ensure the pudding evenly covers the cake while cooking.
Continue on and sprinkle the top of the pudding with the chocolate chips.
Lastly, place a cover over the top of the slow cooker and close. You will cook this on high for 2 to 2 ½ hours. I do not suggest cooking this on low heat. Because there are raw eggs in the recipe you want to use high heat to get the temperate up quickly.
Scoop out the lava cake, feel free to top with ice cream or whipped cream. Now it is time to enjoy your cake!

Can I use homemade cake mix instead?
Yes, you can use any chocolate cake mix that you’d like. You can even use a homemade chocolate cake mix. The directions remain the same no matter what cake you use.
Can I use the cook and serve puddings?
Unfortunately the cook and serve pudding mixes will not work well. Make sure you grab INSTANT pudding mix for this recipe. If they don’t have cookies and cream, you can get vanilla or cheesecake flavor and add crushed Oreos to it.
How long do lava cakes last?
Typically this type of cake is meant to be enjoyed as soon as it is done baking. Once your cook and store it, you run the risk of loosing the liquid or lava texture in the center of the cake. However, if you wrap your leftover cake and refrigerate it your cake could last 2-3 days.
How long do I reheat lava cakes?
If you have saved some lava cake for later (please share your self control with me) then you will want to reheat to enjoy it to it’s full potential. If you are using the over, set at 250 degrees and back for 8-15 minutes. For reheating in the microwave place the cake on a microwave-safe plate and use medium power for 2-4 minutes.

This recipe looks really yummy! I am wondering tho what size crockpot is needed? Can it be made in a smaller crock pot orrrrrrr must it be made in a large one? (I have both sizes, but I was thinking this would be a fun dessert for camping in our RV. I would much prefer not needing to bring my large crock pot along as it would take up more room. Thank you for your reply!
