Christmas Sprinkle Cookies are a soft and chewy vanilla sugar cookie covered with red and green sprinkles. Just like the sprinkle cookies made at a bakery, these Christmas Cookies are deliciously festive!
Christmas Cookies covered in Sprinkles
Sprinkle cookies are a favorite at my house for a few reasons. First, they come together so quickly. We are talking out of the oven in under 20 minutes! Especially if you have little helpers, kids absolutely love rolling the cookie dough into the sprinkles.
You’ll enjoy how easy it is to make a festive dessert with this sprinkle cookie recipe. Simply change the color of the sprinkles for an entirely new holiday! Check out my Halloween Sprinkle Cookie recipe for a great example .
Ingredients for Christmas Sprinkle Cookies
— BUTTER: You’ll need 1 cup butter that’s been brought to room temperature. I use salted butter, but you can use what you have on hand.
— SUGAR: You’ll add 1 cup granulated sugar to make the dough perfectly sweet.
— EGGS: 2 eggs act as both a binding agent and leavening for the cookies.
— VANILLA: This recipe calls for 3 tsp vanilla! Yep!
— DRY INGREDIENTS: You’ll add 2 1/4 cups all purpose flour, 2 tsp baking powder and 1/2 tsp salt to the dough.
— SPRINKLES: You’ll roll the dough in 1 cup holiday sprinkles before baking. Use what you have on hand!
How to make Christmas Sprinkle Cookies
To make the Sprinkle Cookies we will start with the cookie dough.
Make the Cookie Dough
Cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. You can do this with either a stand mixer or electric hand mixer. I tend to use my stand mixer but either will work.
After the butter and sugar is combined, add in the eggs and vanilla extract. This cookie has a great vanilla flavor you are going to love! The last ingredients to go into the bowl are flour, baking powder and salt. Combine until the dough forms. The dough will be soft, you should be able to scoop and roll easily without the dough sticking to your hands, though.
Scoop & Roll in Christmas Sprinkles
Scoop, roll and then shake those sprinkles on! I just place the ball of dough in a bowl alongside the sprinkles and roll the dough until it is covered with sprinkles.
Bake & Enjoy!
Bake the cookies at 350° for 9-10 minutes on either a silicone liner or parchment paper lined cookie sheet for best results. If you don’t have either of these, make sure to grease your cookie sheet.
Be sure to pull the cookies out of the oven before the edges start turning brown to guarantee a nice soft and chewy cookie.
Can I freeze my sprinkle cookies?
Yes, these cookies freeze really well. I suggest freezing the cookies on a cookie sheet for 1 hour prior to putting them into a freezer zip top bag, this will help keep the cookies from freezing together, also making it easier to just thaw one at a time.
Christmas Sprinkle Cookies
Ingredients
- 1 cup butter room temperature
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 eggs
- 3 tsp vanilla
- 2 ¼ cups all purpose flour
- 2 tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 cup green and red sprinkles
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F.
- Either using a stand mixer or a handmixer, cream together the butter and sugar. Cream for about two minutes or until light and fluffy. Scrape down the sides of the bowl.
- Add in the eggs and vanilla and mix until well combined.
- Add in the flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix until fully incorporated. The dough will be sticky.
- Pour your sprinkles into a bowl. Scoop the cookie dough out of the mixing bowl and place in the sprinkles. Roll the dough around in the sprinkles until it is fully covered. Reshaped the dough into a ball before placing on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet.
- The cookies will spread a bit while baking, so I suggest limiting each cookie sheet to about eight cookies.
- Bake at 350° for 10 minutes. Cool completely on the pan. Enjoy!

What Type of Vanilla Extract Should I Use?
A few years ago I tested 10 different vanilla extracts and found new favorites! I love using TOTONAC’s Mexican Vanilla for everyday use. It’s pure vanilla and contains no alcohol, which I like because I don’t like the taste of extracts made with alcohol. Each time I try another, I go back to Totonac’s quickly afterward; it’s so good! I also love using Nielsen Massey Vanilla Bean Paste. Again, this one has the best flavor by far!
Where is the best place to buy Holiday Sprinkles?
I’m going to let you in on a little secret, purchase your sprinkles in bulk for CHEAP from your local grocery store’s bakery! Yes, really! Most bakeries will sell you seasonal sprinkles for a fraction of the price! I purchased 2 cups of sprinkles for under $4.00!
Best news yet, sprinkles keep well for a really long time! Buy in bulk once and you will be set for quite a while! 🙂
You can also find great holiday mixes down the baking aisle at craft stores like Michael’s or Joann’s.
How to You Measure Dry Ingredients?
To understand how to measure dry ingredients, I’ll use the example of measuring flour. This method I’m describing is one most home cooks use. To measure 1 cup of flour, you scoop out flour using a tool that’s NOT your measuring cup and deposit the flour into the 1 cup measuring cup. I gently shake the cup from side to side just to level the flour a bit. Then I use a clean butter knife to level off the flour. If you just need 1 tablespoon of flour, I’d simply scoop up flour using my tablespoon measuring spoon and again, level with a knife.
