Chocolate and peanut butter candy
This chocolate peanut butter candy recipe is similar to my homemade peppermint patties recipe in that it’s a peanut butter patty dipped in a smooth coating of dark chocolate. It’s easy to make and requires only 5 basic ingredients that you may already have in your pantry. Making these no-bake chocolate-covered peanut butter candies requires only a little mixing, forming, dipping, and chilling. Super easy steps that you can even enlist the help of the kids for!
Ingredients for candies
-Peanut butter: You will need 1 cup of peanut butter for the base of the patty filling. You should use creamy for a smoother texture.
-Butter: 5 tablespoons of butter will give us a richer taste.
-Powdered sugar: 2 cups of powdered sugar will add sweetness and help to thicken the fillinng.
-Vanilla: We only need 1 teaspoon of vanilla to help enhance the flavors in these candies. You can use stronger vanilla if preferred.
-Dark Chocolate: You will need 2 cups of dark chocolate for the coating. This is about what you find in an 8 ounce bag of chocolate chips.
-Oil: We need 1 tablespoon of oil (I like to use coconut) to help cook the chocolate into smooth and shiny results. You could also use shortening if you had it on hand.
How to make chocolate peanut butter candy
Whisk together the butter and peanut butter in a large bowl until creamy and smooth.
Mix in the vanilla.
Add in the powdered sugar, working in batches, until well mixed together and the mixture becomes a soft dough.
Use a spoon to help you scoop out the dough and place it in your palm. Roll into any shape you like, but a round cookie shape works perfectly.
Let the shaped peanut butter patties sit in the fridge for half an hour.
In a bowl, microwave your dark chocolate for 1 minute 30 seconds. Be careful not to burn the chocolate.
Mix in your oil, this will help to make the chocolate shiny.
Take a shaped peanut butter patty and lay it on a fork. Use the fork to dip it down into the chocolate to form an even coating all around it and then place the dipped candy onto a piece of parchment paper.
Before the chocolate sets and hardens you can add sugar sprinkles or piped chocolate over the top if desired.
Place your tray of chocolate-covered candies in the fridge to set for about 25-30 minutes before serving.
Enjoy!
Chocolate Peanut Butter Candy
Ingredients
- 1 cup Creamy Peanut butter
- 5 TBSP Butter
- 2 cups Powdered sugar
- 1 tsp Vanilla extract
- 2 cups Dark Chocolate
- 1 Tbsp Oil
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the peanut butter and butter. Microwave for 1 minute. Whisk the butter and peanut butter together till it becomes creamy and smooth.
- Now, add in the vanilla extract and mix well.
- Next, add the powdered sugar in batches and stir everything together. It should take the form of soft dough.
- Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Scoop out a portion of the dough onto your palm and shape it into a small disc. Place each disc on the prepared baking sheet.
- Once all the dough is shaped, refrigerate the peanut butter discs for 30 minutes.
- Melt the dark chocolate in a microwave for 1 minute 30 seconds. Let it sit a few minutes, then add the oil and gently try and stir it. Return chocolate to the microwave in 20-second intervals until it is completely melted. Let it sit in the microwave for 2 minutes between each interval, removing the bowl and gently stirring it. Chocolate scorches easily; go slow and be patient while melting it.
- Take the discs out of the fridge. Dip the discs into the chocolate using a fork to form an even coating, tapping gently to remove excess chocolate. Place them back on the parchment paper. At this stage, before the chocolate sets, you can decorate as you like. You can top them with some sugar sprinkles or pipe some chocolate over them.
- Let cool to set about 25-30 minutes. Serve and enjoy.

Can I use melting chocolate instead of chocolate chips?
Absolutely! You can use melting chocolate, chocolate wafers, or chocolate chips depending on what you have on hand, can find in a store, or would prefer to use. This recipe is pretty versatile so you can even swap out the chocolate flavor for a different variety like milk chocolate or a colored chocolate if trying to fit into a festive party theme.
Can I freeze chocolate peanut butter candies?
Yes, keep your candies stored in an airtight container after they’ve fully cooled and set. Then place in the freezer for 4-5 months and thaw before eating. You can thaw the candies quickly and easily by simply placing them on the counter.

I would love to make these. Do you know about how much filling this makes, or what size scoops you used? Asking so I can guesstimate the size (measure) of filling to do for getting a specific amount…not 16 but more?

Super easy and delicious. Just like grandma used to make, except she called them “buckeyes”.
