MAKING THIS CHOCOLATE CHERRY COBBLER
This easy chocolate cherry cobbler uses canned cherry pie filling and a simple chocolate crust recipe. The dessert comes together so easily and quickly. The crust is made with basic ingredients (flour, sugar, butter, etc) and the chocolate flavor comes from melting semi-sweet chocolate chips. The chocolate batter is dropped over the cherry pie filling and then baked together. This dessert is absolutely delicious with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream!
Ingredients in Chocolate Cherry Cobbler
Flour – All purpose flour works best in this recipe.
Sugar – You only need 1/2 cup of sugar to provide the sweetness in the crust.
Baking powder – Two teaspoons of baking powder act as the leavening agent in the cobbler. For best results, make sure your baking powder isn’t old or expired.
Salt – Just a half teaspoon of salt will help all of the other flavors to pop.
Butter – You will need 1/4 cup (half of a stick) of cold butter. For best results, use real butter instead of margarine.
Chocolate chips – You will need 3/4 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips to provide the chocolate in the cobbler.
Milk – Just 1/4 cup of milk provides the necessary liquid for the cobbler crust.
Egg– One egg helps to bind everything together in the chocolate cobbler crust.
Cherry pie filling – You will need one 21-ounce can of cherry pie filling. If you prefer a different flavor, you can swap this out with raspberry or strawberry pie filling. Both are delicious!
How to make Chocolate Cherry Cobbler
Preheat oven to 350°.
In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Cut in the butter with a fork and knife or with a pastry blender. I like to just mostly use the back of the fork and smash the butter in.
In a separate bowl, melt the chocolate chips in the microwave. Microwave them for about 30 seconds and then stir them up. If they need more melting, do it in 15-second intervals, stirring in between until the chocolate is melted and smooth. Add milk and egg to melted chocolate and mix well. Blend the chocolate into the flour mixture and stir until well combined. The batter will be very thick.
Spread the cherry pie filling into the bottom of a greased 2-quart dish (could use an 8X8 or 9X9 pan also). Drop the chocolate batter randomly over the cherries and bake for 40-45 minutes. Serve warm with whipped cream or ice cream.

CAN COBBLER BE MADE AHEAD OF TIME?
Cobbler can be made ahead of time and baked in advance. Serving it cold is still good but the chocolate crust on the top of your cobbler will be soft after chilling. For that reason, you may want to reheat it in the oven to warm the dessert back up and get the top to crisp up again. You can also warm up each individual serving in the microwave right before serving.
HOW DO YOU STORE CHERRY COBBLER?
You should keep your cherry cobbler inside of the fridge in an airtight container. If your baking dish has a tight-fitting lid, this would be the perfect solution. Just make sure that your cobbler has completely cooled before placing it in the fridge.
HOW DO YOU REHEAT CHERRY COBBLER?
To reheat your chocolate cherry cobbler inside of the oven, bake it uncovered at 375° F for about 20-25 minutes, or until it is bubbling. Place it in the oven before preheating so that the cold baking dish doesn’t explode from the sudden change of cold to hot. The oven and baking dish will warm up together.
DOES COBBLER FREEZE WELL?
Cobbler freezes very well. Just keep your already baked cherry cobbler inside of an airtight container and freeze it for up to 1 month. Then thaw and reheat when you want to eat it.
How to make homemade whipped cream
Whipped cream is absolutely delicious with cobbler! You can find all of our tips on how to make the best whipped cream here.
Classic whipped cream is so easy to make!
CLASSIC WHIPPED CREAM
- 1 pint heavy cream (2 cups)
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Pour heavy cream into mixing bowl. Mix using a stand mixer or hand mixer for 3-4 minutes at medium high – high speed, until mixture thickens. When you pull the whisk up, the cream should form peaks that maintain their shape.
Add the powdered sugar and vanilla, then mix for another minute. Serve with dessert!
