Blueberry Crumble made with fresh blueberries, oats, sugar, butter and cinnamon. This blueberry dessert is simple to make and is perfect with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!
Crumbles and cobblers are perfect desserts because they are so simple to make and they are delicious all year long. They are very versatile – most of them can be made with any fruit that you’d like. Warm desserts are perfect for warming up in the winter, but add some ice cream and they make a refreshing dessert in the summer as well.
Blueberry Crumble
Blueberry Crumble is a delicious dessert made with sweetened fresh blueberries topped with a mixture of oats, sugar, butter and cinnamon. Everything is baked together and the crumble is served warm, often with ice cream!
What type of oats work best in a crumble?
Old fashioned oats work best in crumbles, but you can definitely use quick oats if you prefer. The dessert will be less chewy and the consistency will be a bit different if you swap out the oats, but the flavor will be the same.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A COBBLER AND A CRUMBLE?
The biggest difference between the two is the toppings. They are both baked fruit desserts with a layered topping, but a crumble is a streusel-like topping and a cobbler is more like a thick biscuit or pie dough topping.
Ingredients in Blueberry Crumble
Oats – You’ll need 2 cups of oats. Old-fashioned oats work best in crumbles, but you can use quick oats as a substitute if you’d like. The consistency of the crumble will definitely be different, but the taste will be the same.
Brown sugar – Use a cup of light brown sugar to help sweeten up the crumble. For best results, make sure your brown sugar is soft and fresh.
Butter – Melt one stick of salted butter to mix in with the oats. This moistens up the oats and dissolves the brown sugar and helps to make the “crumble” part of the recipe.
Cinnamon – A teaspoon of ground cinnamon adds a lot of flavor that pairs so well with the oats and blueberries in the dessert.
Blueberries – 2 1/2 cups of fresh blueberries are needed in the crumble recipe. Make sure the blueberries are rinsed and dried before adding. You can use frozen blueberries instead, but make sure that they are thawed before using.
Sugar – You will need 1/2 cup of sugar to mix in with the blueberries. After all, this is dessert!
Vanilla extract – A teaspoon of vanilla extract adds a little bit of extra flavor to the blueberries. The higher the quality of the vanilla, the better.
How to make Blueberry Crumble
Preheat the oven to 425°.
In a medium sized bowl, combine the oats, brown sugar, melted butter, and cinnamon until a slightly wet, sandy mixture forms. Set the bowl aside.
Rinse the blueberries and combine them in a medium sized bowl with the white sugar and vanilla until the blueberries are evenly coated in the sugar.
Pour the blueberries into a 7″x11″ (or 9″X9″) baking dish. Top the blueberries with the oat crumble mixture.
Bake the crumble for 45 minutes and allow it to cool slightly before serving. The dessert is delicious on it’s own, but even better with a scoop (or two) of vanilla ice cream.

CAN I USE A DIFFERENT FRUIT?
Absolutely! If you don’t like blueberries, you can use any type of berry, or combination of berries. Raspberries and blackberries are fantastic in this crumble. I like to use any type of berry that I can pick from my garden or that happens to be on sale at the time.
How long is blueberry crumble good for?
You can store this blueberry crumble in the fridge for up to 4 days. You can reheat each individual serving in the microwave before serving.
You can also freeze the baked crumble for up to 2 months. When ready to eat, place in the oven at 425° until it is heated all the way through.
Can you use frozen blueberries in blueberry crumble?
I prefer to use fresh blueberries in blueberry crumble, but you can swap them out with frozen ones. Make sure to thaw them in the refrigerator before coating them in sugar. You could also use blueberry pie filling instead of fresh blueberries. If you use pie filling, you don’t need to add the sugar or vanilla.
