Crockpot Hawaiian Kalua Pork is tender, juicy, full of flavor and made with only 3 ingredients. Just a few minutes of prep time to make this delicious pork recipe in the slow cooker!
Slow Cooker meals are my favorite because I can do all of the prep work in the morning and have dinner magically ready to eat later in the day! The hour before dinner is one of my busiest times and I usually spend most of it in the car, which makes it pretty tricky to prepare a meal.
This Slow Cooker Kalua Pork is one of my favorites because it is literally one of the easiest recipes I have and everyone loves it. Add some rice and a salad or some fruit and you have a complete meal that is so simple to make.
What is kalua pork?
Kalua pork is a traditional Hawaiian dish that is made by roasting a pig in an underground oven. I love the taste of the pork, but don’t necessarily have the ability to make the pork the traditional way and the crockpot does a pretty good job! You only need to add liquid smoke, water and sea salt to the pork and the results are absolutely fantastic!
What to serve with Kalua Pork?
Kalua Pork is traditionally served with cabbage and rice. There is enough flavor to serve it with plain rice, but I really love serving it with Coconut Rice. Add a simple green salad and your meal is complete!
You can also make sandwiches by putting the pork on a Hawaiian sweet roll. And however you serve the pork, make sure to add some Grilled Pineapple to the menu! Make sure to have some dessert as well – you can’t go wrong with this light and refreshing Mandarin Orange Cake with Pineapple Frosting!
Ingredients in Crockpot Hawaiian Kalua Pork
Pork roast – Make sure that your roast fits in your crockpot! I usually use a 3-4 pound roast and it’s the perfect amount for my family.
Liquid smoke – This is an ingredient that you may not use very often, but it’s key to providing the amazing flavor in this recipe! It can be found near all of the other marinades and barbecue sauces at the grocery store. I use it often in marinating meat to grill and it is fantastic.
Water – You do need to add some water to the slow cooker, but I didn’t count this when I stated there were 3 ingredients, because….well, it’s just water!
Salt – Use sea salt or coarse salt for best results. You will need 2 tablespoons of salt to flavor the meat. If you use a roast that is smaller than 3 pounds, you’ll probably want to reduce this a little bit.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO SLOW COOK PORK?
When you cook a pork roast in a slow cooker, how long you cook it for depends on how large your roast is. I use a small 3-4 pound boneless pork roast for this recipe and I like to cook it in a slow cooker on LOW for 10-12 hours. You can cook it on HIGH for 6-8 hours, but I think the texture and flavor is better when you cook it on low.
I cook this Pork Roast recipe in a 4.5 quart basic crock pot. (Basic but so pretty!)
HOW TO MAKE PORK ROAST RECIPE IN AN INSTANT POT
I’ve also begun making this in my Instant Pot and it’s AMAZING. It’s quite a bit faster than using a Slow Cooker (it takes about 2 hours total!) and I think I like the results even more! The pork is fall apart tender and so flavorful!
Place everything in the Instant Pot just like you would the slow cooker. Lock the lid on and set to Manual High Pressure for 75 minutes. If your roast is larger than 3 pounds, add an additional 10 minutes for every extra pound of pork.
Once the timer is done, let it Natural Pressure Release (don’t open the valve!)
Once all the pressure is released, the pork should be fall apart tender and ready to serve!
