This Waldorf cinnamon apple salad is a Thanksgiving staple in our family. We can’t seem to have the holiday without it, and it’s something we all look forward to every year. Waldorf salad with yogurt is one of those dishes that you can eat no matter what time of year it may be, but when you add in the cranberries and walnuts, it gains those beautiful flavors of fall.
How to make Waldorf cinnamon apple salad
Mix together the cinnamon yogurt dressing and combine it in a bowl with the other chopped ingredients. Stir and serve.
Because this is such an easy recipe to throw together and it doesn’t require any baking or hot things, you can have your children help you to pull it together. You can also use it as a great side dish during those hot summer months when it feels too hot to cook!
How do you make it so the apples don’t brown so quickly?
Once you have cut up the apples, toss them with a drizzle of lemon juice! It is so easy, they last for a few days without browning AND you can’t taste the lemon flavor. The best part is it just tastes like a fresh, crispy, delicious apple! It is also a great touch to this salad especially if you are trying to keep it looking pretty for a holiday party.
Where did Waldorf salad originate?
Waldorf salad was originally made using only celery, apples, and mayonnaise. Created in 1896 by the dining room manager of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, it was an instant success among the diners. Can Waldorf salad be made the day before?
You can make this dish ahead, and doing so gives the apples and yogurt flavors to all combine and meld together better. After making the dish, store it in an airtight container in the fridge (like a covered bowl). Stir before serving to help redistribute some of the liquid that may have separated.
You can also mix the salad ingredients in one container, and the dressing in another and then store them both that way. Mixing them just before serving time to avoid any possible liquid separation.
How long will Waldorf salad keep in the fridge?
If you keep your Waldorf salad in a well-covered bowl, you can store it in the fridge for up to 3 days. You may notice the longer it sits, the more it separates, this is simply due to the moisture in the apples and yogurt. Mix it together before scooping out a serving and you should be fine.
What are the best apples for Waldorf salad?
While you can use any apple you may prefer to make this delicious dish, you may find that a firmer apple holds better and gives the best textures. Not only that but aiming for an apple variety that can offer you sweet and sour as well as a solid texture is a great way to get the most flavor from your salad. I recommend Granny Smith, Pink Lady, Fuji or even Gala apples. Don’t forget you can mix and match for different flavors and color appearance.

Thanks Ellen! It's just some Fall decor I borrowed from my mother-in-law. 😉 I'm so not crafty!
Tori says
I would like to make this dish for Thanksgiving. Does it really need to be served immediately? It would be much more doable if I could make it before my guests arrive.
Jessica says
If you don’t plan to serve it immediately, then just stir in half the dressing when you make it and the other half right before you serve it. It will taste better that way!
Jayme says
How many servings does this make?
Jessica says
I’d say it serves 10-12 as a side dish in a large dinner- such as for Thanksgiving or Christmas, where there are a lot of sides.
