Sausage Potato Boats Ingredients
Johnsonville Sausages – These juicy sausages are the flavorful base of the recipe, providing a savory, hearty bite that pairs perfectly with creamy potatoes. You can use whatever brand sausage you like, I just love how Johnsonville’s taste.
Mashed Potatoes – Creamy and buttery, the mashed potatoes add a comforting, soft layer that balances the richness of the sausages.
Cheddar Jack Cheese – Melted on top, the cheese adds gooey, savory goodness and a golden, slightly crispy finish that makes every bite irresistible.
Tips for making Potato Boats with Sausages
Full instructions in the recipe card below, here are a few tips to make the process easier!
Don’t Overcut the Sausages – Slice the sausages lengthwise but stop before cutting all the way through so they hold the mashed potato filling without falling apart.
Mix Cheese into the Potatoes – Stirring a bit of shredded cheese into the mashed potatoes before filling helps create a creamier, richer filling that sticks inside the sausages.
Use the Sizzling Sausage Grill – Cooking sausages in this enclosed indoor grill ensures they’re perfectly browned and juicy in under 15 minutes, with minimal cleanup.
Broil at the End – A quick 3-4 minute broil melts the cheese and adds a lightly toasted top, giving the dish an irresistible golden finish.
How long are these Sausage Potato Boats good for?
Sausage Potato Boats are best enjoyed fresh, but they can be stored in the refrigerator for 3–4 days in an airtight container. To reheat, warm them in the oven or air fryer so the cheese melts nicely and the sausages stay juicy.
Freezing isn’t recommended, as the mashed potatoes can become watery or grainy and the cheese may separate, which can affect both texture and flavor. For the best taste and presentation, it’s ideal to make just enough for a few days of meals or to serve fresh to family and friends.

I used smoked sausages, cooked them in a pan then sliced them. I don’t have a sausage cooker. This was good, but the potatoes need a kick, they are quite bland with only the cheese. Next time I will doctor up the potatoes some.
