Warm apple crisp with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top is one of my favorite desserts. This recipe is easy to make and is very traditional when it comes to apple crisp. I love the pecans, but you’re welcome to leave them out, or replace them with walnuts, cashews or slivered almonds instead. Don’t leave out the maple though! The maple and apple flavors pair beautifully. I use maple extract to toss with the apples, then drizzle real maple syrup on top after the apple crisp is baked. Maple extract can be found on the baking aisle of the grocery store, by the vanilla extracts.
How do you make apple crisp?
Making apple crisp is easy! Here’s how it’s done. First, prepare your apples by washing, peeling and slicing them. Toss them with a mixture of apple juice, brown sugar, cinnamon, maple extract and cornstarch. Prepare the topping by crumbling all purpose or whole wheat flour with brown sugar and cold butter. Stir in old fashioned oats and chopped pecans. Bake, then top with maple syrup. Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream of course!
What apples are best for making apple crisp?
Firm, crisp and slightly tart apples are the best types of apples for apple crisp. My favorites to use are Pink Lady, Honey Crisp or Fugi apples. These apples are easy to find and aren’t terribly expensive, especially if you buy them in the Fall when apples are in season. I’ve also used Gala apples in this recipe and they taste great as well! You’ll want to avoid using soft, mealy apples like Red Delicious or Golden Delicious in this recipe. Granny Smith apples are a popular variety for baking. I like to use half Granny Smith and half Honey Crisp or Fugi apples for making apple crisp.

How do you make Apple Crisp crisp?
I use butter to give my apple crisp topping that wonderful crisp texture. The butter, in combination with the oats and flour bake together to form that crisp tender consistency that resembles pie crust. You can use shortening instead of butter if you’d like.
Can apple crisp be frozen?
Yes, you can freeze apple crisp after you’ve baked it. If you’re planning to freeze it, remove apple crisp from oven after baking for 40 minutes. Let cool. Store in a freezer friendly air tight container. (Since apple crisp doesn’t have shape per se, it’s a good idea to bake it in the container you plan to freeze it in!) To reheat, let the apple crisp thaw for 30 minutes. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes, then switch the oven to broil. Broil for 1-2 minutes, just until the top gets browned.
Can apple crisp be left out?
Any Apple Crisp leftovers should be refrigerated to prevent spoilage. I like to reheat apple crisp leftovers in the microwave. The topping is never as crisp as it is when it’s fresh, but it’s still absolutely delicious!
Can apple crisp be made ahead and baked later?
Yes, you can make the full apple crisp recipe ahead of time and either refrigerate or freeze, to bake later. When you’re ready to bake it, thaw it on the countertop for 30 minutes, then proceed with the recipe as stated above.
Do you have to peel apples for apple crisp?
You do not have to peel apples for apple crisp, but I prefer the texture of peeled apples more. Peeling apples is quick & simple! I just use a potato peeler and peel the whole apple before coring and slicing it. If you decide not to peel the apples, that’s fine! The apple peel will soften as it’s baked and as a bonus, there are a lot of vitamins and nutrients in the apple peel!
Can apple crisp be made with quick oats?
Yes, you can use quick oats to make apple crisp. I prefer using old fashioned oats because I think the texture of the apple crisp topping is better with old fashioned oats. I like to keep a small container of both old fashioned oats and quick oats in my pantry, however, in a pinch I have used quick oats in place of old fashioned.

What can I use in place of Apple juice?
Jessica says
Any kind of juice would be fine, or you could just use water. 🙂
Joyce says
Recipe calls for 1/2 cup maple syrup yet you use only 2 tabl tablespoons in the recipe. What do you do with the leftover syrup or did I misread the recipe. Thank you.
Jessica says
You drizzle the rest on top of each serving!
