Tips for making amazing homemade rolls
Just a couple quick tips for making sure your dinner rolls turn out perfect every time.
- Making sure your liquids are the correct temperature is an important step in this recipe. If the milk/water is too hot it will kill the yeast. Too cold and the yeast won’t activate and the dough won’t properly rise. The ideal temperature is between 105°-110°F.
- Once all the ingredients have been added, it is very important to knead the dough for the full 5 minutes. This allows the gluten to strengthen, giving the rolls their structure.
Honey Butter Pumpkin Roll Ingredients
Milk: You will need 3⁄4 cup of warm whole milk to create the perfect dough consistency.
Brown sugar: For a wonderful depth of flavor, use 1⁄3 cup of brown sugar.
Water: To activate the yeast, add in 1⁄4 cup of warm water. See tip above regarding desired temperature for this ingredient.
Yeast: Using 1 tablespoon of active dry yeast will help the rolls to rise well.
Pumpkin puree: You need 1⁄2 cup of pumpkin puree; be sure not to use pie filling.
Honey: To sweeten these rolls nicely, add in 3 tablespoons of honey.
Egg: Add in 1 egg to help create a great soft & feathery roll texture.
Vanilla extract: You will need 1 1⁄2 teaspoons of vanilla extract to help enhance the amazing flavors in this recipe.
Flour: For the base of this roll recipe, use 4 cups of all purpose flour.
Cinnamon: Add some amazing spice with 2 1⁄2 teaspoons of cinnamon.

Nutmeg: For even more amazing warm flavor, use 1⁄2 teaspoon of nutmeg.
Clovers: Adding in 1⁄4 teaspoon of ground cloves gives these rolls a subtle earthy taste.
Ginger: You need to use just 1⁄4 teaspoon of ginger for more amazing flavor for these dinner rolls.
Butter: Use 1⁄2 cup of salted butter, room temperature, to give these rolls a nice rich flavor and shine.
How to make Soft Pumpkin Butter Rolls
Dough
In the bowl of a stand mixer, fitted with a whisk attachment, combine the warm milk, brown sugar, warm water and yeast. Lightly whisk all the ingredients together, then let the mixture proof for 5 minutes or until frothy. Then, add in the pumpkin puree, honey, egg and vanilla extract and whisk to combine.
After that, change out the stand mixer attachment to a dough hook.
In a separate large mixing bowl combine the flour, cinnamon, salt, nutmeg, cloves and ginger. Proceed to add the flour mixture to the stand mixer bowl and knead until a soft dough forms. Lastly, add in the room temperature butter and continue to knead the dough for an additional 5 minutes.
Next, transfer the dough into a separate large bowl that has been sprayed with non-stick cooking spray. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let rise for 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
Once the dough has doubled in size, turn it out onto a clean, floured surface. Roll the dough out into a rectangle about 15”x10” in size. Using a pizza cutter, divide the dough into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece, pinching the bottom together to help keep its shape. Place each roll into a greased 9×15 baking dish and let rise for 45 minutes.
Bake
Towards the end of the rising time, start preheating the oven to 350°.
Once the rolls have risen, place them into the preheated oven on the center rack. Bake for 40 minutes, until golden. Once baked, remove from the oven and brush the tops with butter if desired.
How to know if the bread is done
Your bread should register about 200 degrees F on an instant-read thermometer to ensure that it has been cooked fully. Not only that but the top should appear to be a nice golden brown color and as the bread cools, it shouldn’t sink, but should instead remain well-shaped with a rounded top.

HOW DO I KEEP DINNER ROLLS FRESH LONGER?
One easy way to keep rolls fresher longer is to push all the excess air from the bag before it is sealed. Air in the bag will make the bread dry out faster. Also, you can wrap each roll individually to keep it nice and fresh.
CAN I FREEZE THESE DINNER ROLLS?
You bet you can! These dinner rolls save and freeze beautifully. Just make sure they are stored in an airtight container to prevent freezer burn. When you are ready to enjoy, defrost them on the counter for 1-2 hours ahead of time. You can even put them in a warm oven to freshen and warm up before enjoying.
