Halloween chocolate bombs are a fun and spooky way to celebrate! Brightly colored, festive hot chocolate bombs are the perfect homemade Halloween treat!
Hot chocolate bombs are a very popular item and it’s not hard to see why. With so much going on in every ball these customizable treats are perfect for warm beverages. We love making hot chocolate bombs around here and this recipe is packed with fun goodies (or should I say treats) with one cool trick- the ball disappears.
What are Halloween hot cocoa bombs?
A hot cocoa bomb is a round ball of hollowed chocolate spheres put together and filled with cocoa mix inside. We colorized and customized this recipe to match the fun spirit of Halloween in every one. They will melt down in warm milk and release a rich smooth drink.
Ingredients:
-Candy melts: You will need 2 cups of white candy melts and one cup of orange candy melts.
-Food coloring: Use purple gel food coloring (not water-based) to give us purple-colored chocolate.
-Cocoa powder mix: Use your favorite storebought or homemade cocoa powder mix. You will need 6 tablespoons of it.
-Sanding sugar: To get a fun hue use 2 tablespoons of purple sanding sugar or use any other Halloween-colored sanding sugar.
-Candy eyes: To give us a spooky surprise in every treat, use 2 tablespoons of candy eyes or any other Halloween candy.
-Marshmallows: What cocoa is complete without marshmallows? Use ¾ cups of mini marshmallows for the full effect.
How to make Halloween chocolate bombs
Split the white candy melts between two bowls and add the orange melts to a third bowl.
Microwave each bowl in 30-second intervals, stirring between each until the melts are smooth.
In one of the white bowls add in a little purple food coloring with a toothpick. Add it in a little at a time and go slowly so that the chocolate doesn’t seize. Add in more color if needed but don’t add too much or the chocolate will seize.
Add one tablespoon of each color into a half-sphere mold and use a pastry brush or back end of a spoon to lightly swirl them around. Do not overmix as the color will turn brown. Repeat for all of the rounded spheres.
Once the molds have all been filled, place the tray into the fridge or freezer to set for 15-20 minutes. Once set, brush on more chocolate along the top edges if they are thin. You want them thicker so that they can reinforce the ball and not break easily when handled.
Gently remove the spheres from the molds and if the top edges are jagged, you can heat up a plate in the microwave for a minute and then place the shell’s edges down onto the plate to warm them up and melt them to smooth the edges.
At this point, you should have 12 half spheres.
In each of the 6 of the shells place one tablespoon of cocoa powder, 1 tsp sanding sugar, 1 tsp candy eyes, and several mini marshmallows.
Warm a plate in the microwave for a minute and place the empty shells onto the warm plate to melt the edges and create glue. Hold the empty sphere over a filled sphere so that the edges touch and run a clean finger or butter knife along the seam to clean them up.
To make your hot cocoa simply place the ball into a cup or mug and top with warm milk or water. Let the bomb dissolve and then stir with a spoon.
Enjoy!
Halloween Cocoa Bombs
Ingredients
- 2 cups white candy melts
- 1 cup orange candy melts
- Purple food coloring
- 6 TBSP hot chocolate mix
- 2 TBSP purple sanding sugar
- 2 TBSP candy eyes
- 3/4 cup mini marshmallows
Instructions
- Split the white candy melts between two microwave safe bowls. Place the orange candy melts into a small microwave safe bowl. Warm each bowl of candy melts for 30 seconds in the microwave. Stir and return to the microwave for 30 more seconds. Mix well. If the candy melts are still not melted and smooth, microwave again for 30 more seconds until smooth.
- For one of the bowls of white melted candy, add purple food coloring. I dipped a toothpick halfway into the food coloring and then dipped it into the candy melts and that was the perfect amount. Remember, the more food coloring you add, the easier it will seize up so go slow when adding more color.
- Spoon 1 Tbs of each color into each half sphere silicone mold. Use a pastry brush or back of a spoon to gently swirl the colors together to create a marble like effect. Too much mixing will cause the colors to mix and become a brown color. Once each of the molds is filled, place into the fridge or freezer to set for 15-20 minutes. Once set, if the top edges of the bomb shells are thin, brush a little of the remaining candy melts around the top edge to reinforce.
- Gently remove the shells from the molds. If the top edges are jagged, you can heat a plate in the microwave for a minute and then place the shells down onto it for a few seconds to smooth the edges. At this point, you should have 12 half sphere shells. In 6 of the half shells, spoon 1 Tbs of cocoa, 1 tsp sanding sugar, 1 tsp candy eyes and several mini marshmallows.
- Warm a plate in the microwave for a minute. Place the empty half sphere shell onto the plate to warm the edges to create a glue. Place the empty half onto the corresponding filled half and ensure that the edges meet up. Run a clean finger around the seams to clean them up.
- To make hot cocoa, place a cocoa bomb into the bottom of a coffee mug and pour warm milk over the cocoa bomb. Let the bomb dissolve. Stir with a spoon to fully emulsify before enjoying.

Can I use purple candy melts instead of white chocolate?
If you are lucky enough to get your hands on some purple candy melts like Wiltons candy melts, then yes, you can use them in place of the white chocolate and purple food coloring. This should save you a little effort while still giving you smooth chocolate results.
Would Halloween sprinkles work inside these bombs?
Yes, you can add in some of those fun and festive Halloween confetti sprinkles. They can add in a lot of color and shape and should dissolve in the drink if the temperature is warm enough. This is a great idea if you can’t find candy eyes this time of the year.
