Appetizer Skewers are such a fun and easy way to serve various types of foods. Putting your sandwich onto a skewer, you are able to pack a little bit of everything you like all onto the stick. Bread, lettuce, deli meat, cheese, veggies, you name it!
Appetizer Skewers
Skewers are not often thought of when it comes to appetizers but, let me tell you, they totally should be!! I love making skewers as an appetizer for many reasons. First, skewers are totally a kid friendly thing.. both for eating and making! Little hands are perfect for stringing food onto a stick.
Second, the options as far as what actually goes onto the skewer are endless! You can make them sweet, savory, or a little bit of both! Think Charcuterie Board on a stick!
Deli Sandwich Skewer
Making Sandwich Skewers is something that I actually do quite often for bridal or baby showers! It is an easy, grab and go that actually has a little bit of nutritional value. There is the added bonus that you can customize the skewer any way you’d like. I also like to serve them with a little ranch or honey mustard cup that can be dipped in if desired.
Sandwich Appetizer Skewer Ideas
Here is a list of ingredients that can be used when making your appetizer skewers. This, of course, is not limited to just this list, the list is probably endless but here are some good suggestions.
- Hearty bread, like an artisan loaf or sourdough bread
- Ham, turkey, roast beef
- salami, pepperoni
- bacon
- lettuce
- pickles
- tomatoes
- cucumbers
- olives
- bell peppers
How to assemble the perfect Sandwich on a Stick
Having done this quite a bit, I have kind of figured out the best method and order to put all of the ingredients onto the skewer. Obviously, the end caps will be your bread. I also like to put a piece of bread in the middle and build 2 sandwiches on each stick, as you can see in the photo above.
If your bread is cut into slices prior to purchasing, I usually fold those in half to get a thicker, larger piece of bread. If you are cutting your own loaf, just do thick chunk of bread.
Lettuce always goes next to the bread, meat on top of the lettuce followed by cheese and a veggie. I like to use cubed cheese but you could definitely used the pre-sliced cheese cut up if you’d like. Repeat that again and finish it off with another slice of bread!

Can I make these appetizer skewers ahead of time?
Absolutely! You can prep all of the ingredients ahead of time for sure, cut the meat, slice the cheese, prep those veggies etc. You’ll want to serve the skewers the same day they are made, however. If not serving immediately, make sure to store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator, putting a paper towel in between each layer to soak up any unwanted moisture.
Serve the skewers alongside some dipping sauce or drizzle with a combination of mayo and mustard prior to serving.
