Tiger Butter is one of the easiest holiday candies you can make! If you’ve never made, or maybe even never heard of Tiger Butter, add these items to your grocery list and make it! It’s such a simple candy and everyone just devours it. It’s super creamy with amazing flavor and hello, it’s also insanely pretty. Oh and did I mention it takes just 3 ingredients and about 5 minutes to make?! Talk about a winner!
What is Tiger Butter Fudge?
Tiger Butter is an absolutely delicious, insanely easy type of Christmas candy! It requires just 3 ingredients and a few minutes to make. Tiger Butter is a soft chocolate candy with a smooth, rich peanut butter flavor. It has the consistency of fudge but is the size and shape of a bark candy.
How to make Tiger Butter Fudge
Tiger Butter is SO easy to make! First, assemble your ingredients. You’ll need semi sweet chocolate chips, white chocolate chips and creamy peanut butter. I think chunky peanut butter would taste good in this recipe, but the swirls wouldn’t look nearly as pretty, so I use creamy peanut butter.
Melt the white chocolate chips in the microwave. You can also heat the peanut butter for 30 seconds. Combine the two ingredients and stir gently until smooth and well combined. Place a piece of parchment paper on a cookie sheet. Pour the peanut butter mixture onto the parchment paper. Use a rubber scraper to smooth the mixture out into a rectangle shape. It’s okay if it doesn’t reach the sides of the pan.
Heat the semi-sweet chocolate chips until melted and smooth. Spoon dollops of chocolate out in lines over the peanut butter mixture. Once all of the chocolate is transferred, use a sharp knife in long, smooth strokes to swirl the chocolate until your desired design is achieved. Sometimes I swirl it more, other times less, but it’s always fun! Let chocolate cool to set, then cut into 1.5″ squares.
How do you melt chocolate in the microwave?
Melting chocolate in the microwave is easy if you go slowly. Always use a glass or ceramic bowl and chocolate that’s not old. To melt 1 cup of chocolate chips I’d begin with 1 minute in the microwave. After the 1 minute, let chocolate sit for 2-3 minutes. Then, gently stir and see if chocolate begins to melt smooth. If it’s still really solid, add 20 seconds in the microwave, then let it sit again. Often chocolate looks like it’s not melted when it really is, and you don’t know for sure until you gently shake or stir it. If your chocolate melts but it’s too thick to work with, try adding 1/2 teaspoon of coconut oil or shortening, then letting it melt and stirring it in.
Tiger Butter candy ingredients
- 1 bag vanilla chips (11 oz)
- 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
- 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions for making Tiger Butter Christmas Candy
- Line a bakers quarter sheet (or a 9×13 glass pan) with parchment paper or foil.
- Put semi sweet chocolate chips in a small glass bowl. Microwave for 1 minute and stir gently until smooth. Set aside.
- Pour vanilla chips in a medium sized glass bowl. Microwave for 1 minute 30 seconds. Stir gently until smooth. Add peanut butter and stir until well combined and smooth.
- Pour vanilla-peanut butter mixture onto the prepared pan. Mixture won’t reach the edges of the pan and that’s OK. Once it’s settled, take the melted semi sweet chocolate and pour it onto the vanilla-peanut butter mixture in lines.
- Take a knife and run it the opposite direction of the chocolate lines you created, to achieve a swirl pattern. Run your knife through the mixture as much as you’d like, to create your desired swirl pattern.
- Let cool either on the countertop or in the fridge. Cut into small squares. Store in an airtight container.

What’s the best chocolate to use for making candy?
Use the absolute BEST chocolate you have access to! Especially for this recipe where there are only 3 ingredients, each one really counts. I used Guittard white chocolate chips and semi sweet chocolate chips for this recipe. I’ve also used Ghirardelli chocolate chips, but they’re harder to find.
Can you freeze Tiger Butter?
Yes, you can freeze Tiger Butter in an airtight container for up to 1 month. It’s best to stack layers with pieces of parchment paper in between so that the pieces stay pretty.

Why is it necessary to use a glass dish?
Jessica says
Because a glass or ceramic dish holds heat in better and will melt chocolate more evenly.
Carol Cardona says
Thank you.
Emi says
How many calories is a square? (It being cut into 24 Identical pieces)
Sheridan says
Hi! How long does this last in the fridge for?
It’s amazing!
Jessica says
It’s best if eaten within 7-10 days.
Dave says
Great idea – needs further refinement which is the reason for the low 2-star rating.
Be careful microwaving chocolate. It scorches easily and you’ll end up with a useless pile of semi-dry chocolate glop. Morsels are quite stubborn to get to melt and I never did get a liquid even when using a double boiler. I finally got something acceptable to work by dropping in small dollops then swirling it with a table knife. It’s for my grand daughter and she only cares about the flavor which is quite good.
Further research indicates that a chocolate called “couverture” chocolate is what should be used for melting. It has a higher fat content. Or, any high quality milk or dark chocolate bars like Lindt chocolate will yield better results.
Jessica says
I gave instructions for melting the chocolate- looks like you didn’t quite follow those directions. Dang it- it’s a super easy dessert, but following the directions is helpful!
Coley says
I don’t eat fudge. I find it too sweet for my taste but I make different kinds for my family. Well, I eat this fudge! Holy cow this stuff is good. It’s perfectly yummy as is though I did find it to be quite thinner than traditional fudge, almost like a bark consistency in that sense. But it’s so good I don’t know if I’d want to put it in a smaller pan because it may change the taste, not sure. Either way, tastes great!!!
Alison says
Coley, I love that this is your exception to fudge eating!
Michelle says
I made this for Christmas this morning and love love love it!! Super easy and fast is an added bonus! Will definitely be making again.
Alison says
Thanks so much Michelle! I’m so glad this was able to be part of your Christmas!
Taylor says
Hi! Are vanilla chips just white chocolate chips?
Nellie says
Yep!
NickiDE says
This is really good. The only change I made was to prepare it in a 9X9 non-stick pan. It was just the right thickness.
Carla Zolman says
What brand of peanut butter works best with this recipe?
Nellie says
I would just make sure to use a regular peanut butter (like Jif or Skippy), instead of a more natural peanut butter (one where the oil separates out) for best results.
Nancy says
My tiger butter if I leave it out event for a little while gets to soft melts any solutions
Jessica says
It really all depends on how warm your keep your house! You can chill it until just before serving.
Becky Madsen says
The flavor is great! I found that one bag of vanilla chips and 1/2 cup of peanut butter was nowhere near enough to fill a 9×13 dish (unless you want it incredibly thin). Next time I would double that portion of the recipe and perhaps the chocolate as well.
Nicole says
This is a thinner fudge recipe but doubling it can be done if you want it thicker
Rebecca says
I’m rating lower because the instruction to use a 9×13 pan resulted in fudge that was way too thin to be called fudge – it was about 1/4 -1/2 thick, which looked ridiculous after I cut it. An 8×8 would have been much better. Taste was a little too sweet but the technique of using the microwave was great and couldn’t have been easier.
Nicole says
I’m sorry to hear that you didn’t like your fudge that thin. Making it in an 8×8 pan would give you thicker fudge but will take a bit longer to set and harden before it can be sliced and served.
Deb says
It’s perfect. Made this for years. I grew up with this and we always called it peanut butter swirl back in the day and it has always been thin. I love it.
Michelle says
Looking at the recipe I really didn’t expect much. I honestly thought I’d wasted my chocolate and my time but still had to make it just to see because it’s so simple. Oh my goodness am I thankful curiosity took over because this simple little recipe is absolutely scrumptious! Maybe it was the chocolate I used but it was smooth, creamy, melt in your mouth dreamy! Big hit in my house, at family gatherings and my friends love it too. It’s a favorite for sure! Thank you for this recipe!
Nicole says
Thats awesome. Thanks for sharing!
Kristy Miller says
Can this be stored for later use? I make holiday cookies and fudge to give out as gifts.
Jessica says
Yes! I’ve not tried freezing it, but you can store it in the fridge between layers of parchment or wax paper!
Tiffany McLaughlin says
Can you use almond bark instead of white chocolate chips?
Jessica says
Absolutely!
Puvithra says
What would be a good substitute for vanilla chips?
Jessica says
You need some type of mild chocolate, so you can do white chocolate in any form really. You could do a milk chocolate, but the end result won’t look as interesting as you wouldn’t have the dark-light from the 2 different types of chocolates.
Poppy says
It’s a wonderful recipe but way too thin to be fudge, as we know fudge. So instead of cutting this into bars, I made it in individual cookie cutters and it was PERFECT!!! Thank you!!
Jessica says
Yes, it has more of a fudge texture, so I didn’t want to call it a bark. I feel like it’s more of a fudge than a candy… you see my dilemma! 😉
Diane says
Made this last year for my dad. He LOVED it. So easy to make, will make again, but I use milk chocolate chips.
Jessica says
So glad to hear Diane!
sharon huskins says
This is a hit at my house now. I love that is so few ingredients and so easy to make. I didnt mind it being thin because you had mentioned somewhere about bark so I was expecting it to be thinner and called mine Tiger Butter Bark…Thanks for Sharing
Jessica says
I’m so glad you like it! Yes, it’s the thickness of a bark but the consistency of fudge.🤷♀️ So glad you enjoyed it!
Debra Brinneman says
I made Tiger Bark for 🎄🎁 Christmas this year. My family loved it so much, they want me to make it again. I set it out on the counter to cool and it still wasn’t hardening, so I cut it in squares before I put it in the refrigerator. After it hardened it broke right apart in perfect squares. It actually looked like a professional dessert. Thank you for the recipe. Cheap to make, too.
Jessica says
So glad youe family enjoyed it Debra!!
Denise Z. says
Tastes delicious but calling it fudge is misleading. It’s more like a candy bar.
